KEONDRA

“Keke, please call me. I need to know that you’re okay. I miss you, baby.”

I set my phone on the countertop and let the tear slide down my cheek. I’d just listened to the voicemail from my mama. I was about to head to Amiko’s dance studio. After Sandrene’s pole dancing class Sunday, she said I should try my hand at ballet since I was so light on my feet. I’d frowned at her, but she informed me that Amiko taught an adult beginner’s class on Tuesday evenings. When she first said it, I’d gotten a visual of my grown ass in class with a bunch of four-year-olds.

I enjoyed the pole dancing class. When I learned all the women had stripper names, I knew I had to come up with one. They had all the good names sewed up. I was trying to decide between the names Mystique and Sapphire. I was leaning more toward Sapphire since they complimented me by saying I looked like African royalty. Kaysyn had my first choice of Hypnotic. However, that name fit her well. I found myself staring at her. Her eyes were indeed hypnotic. I could see how she locked Seneca down, especially after she danced.

I was paying close attention to everyone. Alexz and Lexi seemed to be the most outgoing. I enjoyed all the ladies though. They were all extremely nice. Maybe next time Sasha could come with us, and Corben could stay and play with the kids. They could both use the getaway from everything, although Beaumont wasn’t far. It was far enough away to provide solace, especially being around a family as genuine as the Berottes.

I could also see why Joel’s gangsta ass didn’t go as often. Everyone was married or engaged. Dinalee informed me that they would be getting married soon. Hopefully, Joel invited me to the wedding. Being that he brought me along Sunday, I didn’t see why he wouldn’t invite me to accompany him to their wedding. They were the only ones that hadn’t gotten married yet. Joel probably felt awkward not having a woman, especially after Jungle settled down.

I grabbed my phone and put it in my purse then got my keys to head out. When I opened the door, Joel was standing there, scaring the shit out of me. “Fuck!” I yelled.

He smiled, but it looked like I’d scared him too. “I was just coming to chill wit’chu. I got done early. Where you going?”

“Don’t laugh, but I’m going to Amiko’s studio for a beginner’s ballet class.”

He frowned slightly. “She teach ballet to adults?”

“Yes. That was my first thought too.”

I giggled as he pulled me close and kissed my lips. “I missed you. Is it cool if I chill out here until you get back?”

“Of course. The class is an hour long, so I should be back in two hours.”

“A’ight. I got a surprise for you at my house too. Whenever you have some free time, you can come see it.”

I twisted my lips to the side. “You installed a stripper pole, didn’t you?”

He chuckled then acted offended. “What would give you that idea, baby girl?”

I chuckled, too, and playfully rolled my eyes. “See you when I get back, silly.”

He kissed my lips again then smacked my ass. I loved when he did that shit. Although that shit stung at times, knowing just how sexy he thought I was made me feel it within even more than I already did. If he wasn’t careful, he was gonna give me the big head. He stood in the doorway and watched me until I took off for the interstate.

I would have never thought I would have a relationship this healthy with him. It had only been a couple of weeks, but I expected a lot more bullshit by now. He was so adamant about avoiding intimacy. I just knew it would have been more of a struggle. He threw out that warning for nothing on Sunday. He still kissed me, hugged me, and showed me attention and intimacy like I’d been accustomed to receiving from him.

As I took the thirty-minute drive to the studio, my phone rang. When I saw my gangsta on my lockscreen, I answered. “Hello?”

“Damn, you got a lot of toys and shit. You use all these dildos?”

“Joel! Why are you going through my shit?”

He laughed. “Because I find out shit about you that you don’t say. I already knew your ass was a freak though. I’m going look in your medicine cabinet next.”

I laughed loudly. “Just know, every action has a reaction, and I’m the queen of petty. When I get back to your house, it’s on!”

“Thanks for the warning so I can get rid of my blow-up doll.”

“Nigga!” I hollered with laughter. “Get the fuck off my line before you make me wreck my car!”

He laughed loudly too. “Keondra, this shit between us feels good. I like that feeling more than I thought I would.”

I smiled. “I’m happy too… happier than I’ve ever been.”

“Talk to you when you get back.”

“Okay.”
