He gave me a small smile. “Yeah, if you want me to.”

“Yeah.”

“I’ll do whatever you want from me. Period. Told you that repeatedly.”

“What if I wanna quit working?”

He gave me the side-eye because he knew I was lying. However, he humored me and said what he always says to anything I want. “Say less.”

THIRTEEN

VEGAS

“They don’t have any leads, so you should be in the clear. Jericho and I had your back with that reckless shit you did. We canvased the neighborhood, making sure we didn’t see any witnesses after you sent that raggedy ass text.”

I chuckled at Ali’s explanation, while Shy slowly shook his head. We’d just gotten to Beaumont. The fellas wanted to hang out and talk about a job we had coming up for the Henderson family out in Nome. There was some kind of event they wanted us to secure. It would be cool to hang out with Philly again. I heard he would be working with us from time to time. Plus, Rondo was tripping on having a bachelor party. DJ wanted to take him to a strip club, but he wasn’t feeling that shit one bit.

Jamel wasn’t feeling it either. Hell, at this point, thanks to Jamel’s wife, Sandrene, we all had our own private strippers at home. Keondra hadn’t moved in with me, but hell, she was there more often than not. We hadn’t broken in the stripper pole yet either, but tomorrow, I planned to have her show me what she’d been learning.

“Nigga, you with us?”

I looked up to see everybody chuckling as Jungle stared at me. I shot him the finger. “What I miss?”

“Apparently, Keondra, nigga!” Chad said and laughed.

I did miss her. We were always around each other. Shit felt weird when we were apart. She had a few classes throughout the week and studio time another day. One of those audio clips she’d done for a book had paid off. An author by the name of Latisha needed some hood shit. Kee was happy as hell she could get paid to sound like herself. The author told her that she knew of a lot of authors who were searching for black narrators and would pass her name along.

Kee was stressing, trying to be sure to give her best for every chapter. I had to work that pussy out regularly to keep her ass calm. We’d been fucking so much I barely had time for anything else. Luckily, I didn’t have to do shit if I didn’t want to. All those years of hustling had paid off since I didn’t end up in jail or in the grave.

“We were just talking about officially welcoming you and Keondra into the crew, nigga. The women have their own shit. They formed it when we were out there wilding. They needed the support to deal with all the bullshit that came along with what we were doing,” Ali said.

“Oh. Just let me know when. We always dine for a turnup.”

Jungle slapped my hand as Rondo shook his head. “We got so many fucking accents in this crew it’s crazy. Louisiana, H-Town, Latino, Haitian, and Chad bad talking ass.” Chad pushed Rondo. He laughed and continued. “I guess Watchful Eyes is the fucking melting pot.”

We all chuckled as the women came outside with food. We were at Shy’s big ass house, sitting around the pool. The kids were having a great time in the game room by the garage. I could see Keondra and I having a kid or two or three. I wouldn’t be able to talk about Jungle any more after that. I’d been shooting the fucking club up every chance I got.

With Whitney, Chelsea, Lynn, and now Alexz being pregnant and Kee being around them nearly every weekend, she was sure to turn up pregnant sooner rather than later. She was drinking the same water. When they placed the platter of wings on the table, Chad went in. “Eat up, y’all. I know my husband, so there’s another two platters in the house,” Lexi said.

We all chuckled. Kaysyn brought out deviled eggs, and Seneca slapped her ass. Like Ali, I paid attention to everything, so it didn’t get by me when Kaysyn’s ass bounced. She was fine as hell. I’d had my eye on her for a minute, after she and Seneca fell out behind that shit with Jericka, but I knew trying to be with her would fuck the crew up. It didn’t hurt to admire though.

Besides, I had a fine ass woman that I could call my own. I didn’t look at any of these women the same now. I looked at them like I looked at Fawn and Amiko. They were my sisters. Kaysyn turned and kissed his lips. “We’re wanting to swim, baby. Is that cool?”

I looked up at Keondra and frowned. What the fuck she asking me for? I stood from my seat and faced her. “Why wouldn’t it be cool?”

“Well, I didn’t know how you would feel about me being in a bikini in front of other men.”

“Let me tell you something. I need you to summon Keondra from Puerto Rico. These niggas all got their own women. I don’t give a fuck what you wear around here. I know I ain’t gon’ have to check nobody. Now, if we were in the hood, I’d have to see this bikini first.”

She chuckled. “I just wanted to be respectful.”

“I appreciate that. I just can’t believe all y’all black women finna get in this pool and get your hair wet.”

“Well, we talked about that. All of our men are millionaires. I mean… you haven’t talked about your finances to me, but… they were saying that our men had us covered.”

She seemed nervous all of a sudden. I grabbed her hand and pulled her away from everyone. “Why you acting all nervous?”

“Because my mama used to say you not supposed to speak on a man’s money, especially if he’s never mentioned it. I’m sorry.”
