I chuckled again. When I heard the door unlock, I stood and made my way back to it to make sure she didn’t try to slip out of here. Seeing the tears on her face softened me something fierce. I pulled her in my arms and hugged her. She wrapped her arms around my waist. “Joel, I didn’t mean to say it aloud.”

“I know, but why?”

“Because I don’t want you to think that means full steam ahead. I still need to be cautious.”

When she pulled away and stared up at me, I kissed her soft, thick lips. “I understand. Have you eaten?”

She shook her head. “Well, let’s go down and eat something. We’ll go to my mother’s office right after.”

She smiled slightly at me calling Dr. King my mother. “Sounds natural. That’s a good thing.”

I nodded and smiled. We stared at one another a little longer. Suddenly, she yelled, “Fuck!”

Before I could ask what was wrong, she’d pulled me to her and tongue kissed the fuck out of me. As much as I wanted this shit, I obliged her for a moment then stopped her. When I pulled away, she was panting loudly, and her nipples were hard enough to cut glass. “I’m gonna honor your wish for us to go a little slower, because I want to prove to you that I will be better. I don’t want you doubting me later.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry. You’re just irresistible.”

“So are you, baby. I love you.”

“I… I love you too.”

I kissed her lips again, allowing it to linger a bit, then grabbed her hand and led her downstairs.

“Hi, can I help you?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m the ten o’clock appointment. I called at the last minute, and you said she could squeeze me in.”

“Oh, yes! Mister Knight. Can I get a copy of your driver’s license, please?”

I pulled out my wallet and gave her my driver’s license as Keondra had a seat. It was her idea for me to see if I could schedule an appointment. She said Dr. King could refuse to see me. I knew if she did refuse, it would be because she didn’t feel safe, not because she didn’t want to meet her son. The lady at the desk gave me papers to fill out.

I went took a seat next to Keondra and filled out everything I needed to fill out then brought it back to the lady at the desk. She took a payment of one hundred fifty dollars from me since I didn’t want to use my insurance, then I went back to my seat to wait. Kee grabbed my hand and held it between hers.

We were able to talk a little more about my expectations and how I now wanted a relationship with my mother. Kee’s presence had calmed me significantly. We didn’t discuss what we were doing or how we would go about it, but I knew that I was much more satisfied with this than not seeing her at all.

“Mister Knight?”

I looked up at the lady calling me to the back. I pulled Kee up with me and followed her to the doctor’s office. I’d requested that Keondra be able to sit in on the session, and they told me it wouldn’t be a problem. Once we sat, the young lady said, “The doctor will be in shortly.”

I nodded. “You okay?” Kee asked.

“Yeah. I’m just a little nervous about her initial reaction. She could think I’m here to kill her.”

“I doubt that… at least not with me being here with you.”

She chuckled, and I did too as there was a knock on the door. I quickly checked my facial expression, making sure I wasn’t frowning as the door opened. When she walked in and closed the door behind her, she looked up at us. “Oh shit.”

“It’s cool. I promise.”

She looked like she’d pissed on herself. Remaining quiet, she maintained her position, not moving the slightest muscle. I didn’t approach her right away. “I checked your story with Jungle. That’s Ice’s son. He’s two years older than me.”

“Milton Junior?”

“Yes. He goes by Jungle. Ice passed down everything to him, including information on everybody. So he already knew everything. I apologize for calling you a liar. I just couldn’t imagine that Joshua would be that cruel to the mother of his child. I knew he was ruthless, but damn. This was wrong.”

She still remained still, so I approached her slowly as she glanced at Kee. “I told Keondra I was coming to meet you, and she surprised me by showing up to support me.”

She nodded as she swallowed hard. When I stood directly in front of her, I noticed her lip trembling. She lifted her hand to my cheek and gently stroked it with her thumb, right above my beard. Her resolve crumbled, and she fell into me. I closed my eyes and embraced my mother. This moment seemed surreal. This was a moment I had never imagined myself having.
