I fell out laughing at him trying to mimic how I talked, sounding all proper and shit. Mr. King laughed too. That question was a great icebreaker for Joel. He continued. “I wasn’t looking for a girlfriend. I just wanted an island fling. She agreed. She gave me her number, and I told her we would hook up when we got back to the states. I lied. She made me feel things I wasn’t ready for. I didn’t call. I ran from her.”

Mr. King gave me a soft smile as Joel leaned over and kissed me. “Well about a month and a half ago… two months ago… something like that, we saw each other at a daycare. She was picking up her nephew, and I was picking up my best friend’s one-year-old son. She didn’t want shit to do with me because I’d ghosted her for two years. I didn’t blame her. It turned out our families were connected to the Patterson family. We ended up being around each other the same day at a celebration. After a few bumps in the road, here we are.”

“Wow. I hope I don’t offend you in any way by saying so, but Solé told me that your fathers worked the streets for the same kingpin, right?”

We both nodded. “My dad protected us from the life as much as he could. Everyone knew he had a family, but no one knew what we looked like. When he was killed, Joel’s dad, Joshua, looked after us until he was killed about two years later. So, our families were extremely close. He even went to school with my sister but didn’t know who she was connected to.”

“Wow. Your dad did an amazing job shielding y’all then.”

I nodded. “Only the kingpin knew who we were. Joel’s best friend is his son.”

“Well, the two of you look like you were made for each other.”

I smiled then glanced up at Joel to see he was smiling at me. The doorbell rang, interrupting our conversation. Right after, the door opened, and I heard someone running. A little girl with a princess tiara and wand hopped on Mr. King’s lap. “Hi, PaPa!”

“Hey, baby. How are you?” he responded while embracing her.

She was sure to hold on to her tiara to make sure it didn’t fall off. She glanced at us and said, “Hi. I’m Princess Tiana!”

I chuckled as a woman came in, looking exhausted. She was holding a younger child on her side, with a bag hanging from her shoulder on the other side. “Hey, Dad. Can you take Dakota? I have to go to the bathroom.”

“Hey. Yeah, sure.”

She looked at us and smiled. “I’ll be right back.”

We both nodded at her as Princess Tiana stared at Joel. “I like your hair.”

“Thank you.”

I smiled at her. I liked his curly hair too. It was so soft.

“That was our daughter, Giselle. These are her children, Kizzie A.K.A. Princess Tiana and her son, Dakota. Kizzie, that’s your Uncle Joel and Aunt Keondra,” Mr. King said.

“Hi, sweetie. You can call me Aunt Keke.”

She looked confused for a moment, so Mr. King further explained. “Joel is your mom’s other big brother.”

“That’s you and MoMo’s son?”

“Yes. You’re very smart,” he said and winked at us. “And Aunt Keke is?—”

“His wife!” she yelled.

Joel grabbed my hand and squeezed it slightly, so I turned to him. His eyes were pinning me to the damn couch. He licked his lips, and my clit tingled at the sight. Was he silently saying what I thought he was? He wanted me to be his wife one day? We would definitely be talking about this when we left.

Mr. King chuckled again. “She’s his girlfriend. She might be his wife one day though.”

“Uncle Joe,” she said, leaving off the L at the end. “Are you going to marry Aunt Keke?”

“Yeah, one day. I can’t let her get away from me. You gon’ help me to make sure she doesn’t run away?”

“Yes!”

She hopped right onto my lap as I laughed. “Oh my goodness. I’m so sorry.”

I looked up to see Giselle coming back to the room. “Kizzie, get down.”

“It’s okay. She’s fine. I’m Keondra, but my family calls me Keke. I’m Joel’s girlfriend.”
