She stared up at him. “You had a list?”

He nodded, and she stared into his face. She kept quiet.

“You aren’t curious?” Jeron cocked his head.

Xeva snorted. “Of course, I am curious, but I am also trained.”

He leaned into her and trailed his lips across her forehead. She smiled at the warm, soft touch. “Well, my mother insisted on a woman who knew how to work. You do. She insisted that it be someone who gets along with my family, and you do. Someone who likes kids. You do, but you don’t know how to deal with them, so that can be learned.” As he spoke, he trailed small kisses over her face.

She hummed happily, lifting her face to him.

“For me, I wanted someone that I was happy to see. Someone who lifted my heart just by smiling at me. Someone who wasn’t afraid of me. That is important. My vibration makes some people ill.”

She smiled. “I like it. Even when I had you flipped over my saddle, I liked it.”

He grinned. “That was a surprising move. Is your strength part of your manifestation?”

“Yes. It is. The Horseman setup is a telekinetic projection using environmental fibres to provide the appearance of a solid structure.”

He leaned back and blinked. “Huh.”

She wrinkled her nose. “Too technical?”

“No, but why did the blast hit you so hard? I barely felt anything.”

She opened and closed her mouth. “Reasons.”

He stared, and understanding dawned. “You put your shielding around me.”

“Don’t get a swelled head. Prisoners have to be kept alive in Aksalla, as much as innocent bystanders.”

He wrapped his arms around her and rolled to the bed, cuddling her against him. “I am an idiot. I thought the reason that I didn’t feel the blast was that I was so tough.”

“Nope. My head is thick, and my hips are wide. You were well protected.”

He stroked the curve of her hip. “I do so enjoy benefiting from proximity to your hips.”

Xeva pushed herself against him. She did enjoy the vibrations coming from him. It relaxed her on a very basic level.

She pressed soft kisses to the bite she had put on him. “I thought you had accelerated healing.”

“I do.”

She ran her fingertip over the mark. “Why is this here?”

“I want it there,” he whispered.

She whispered back, “If I had known you had tattoos, I would not have marked you. Marring artwork hurts my feelings. I would have kept my nails to myself.”

“The tattoos are fine. I love the feel of your nails on me. It makes me feel wanted.” His hands moved over her.

“If my nails are digging in, you are very much wanted.” She smiled against his shoulder. “In fact, in that case, you are demanded.”

He smoothed his hand over her back. “I wish I could go back and do it over so you didn’t get hurt.”

“Me, too, but then I wouldn’t be here. I would be on another mission somewhere, and you would be in lockup.” She stroked his chest. “You wouldn’t have gotten the mineral in time, and the storm would have swept over the island, leaving devastation behind.”

He sighed. “You always know just what to say to make things better.”
