“Naw, I think I will keep you.” She wrinkled her nose. “You have potential.”

Jeron slid his arm around her, and they walked back toward her family and his.

A week later, Quin came over and waved. “Hey, Xeva.”

Xeva said, “Be there in a minute.”

She picked up a tray and brought it out to one of the tables on the deck. Quin took a seat and smiled. “I think I know what you want to know.”

“How do you make alternative shapes? I have seen you with whales, tigers, horses. How do you make them?”

Quin smiled. “I have seen you with your horse and armour. You read stories with knights and horses?”

“When I first got out of the lab. Yes.”

“So, that affected what you considered safe. When our transport exploded, most of us got out. We smeared blood on the seats, and Bea got us out of there and to the island in one shot. We were scared, shaking, starved, in lab scrubs, and covered with soot and blood. Revakka and her husband got us shelter, discussed our situation with us, and then had a meeting with elders from other local villages. We were offered the opportunity to be daughters of the island. We would be given basic education, shelter, and food. We would promise to remain on the island and seek partners here when possible. Some of us have omega marks, but there are only so many alphas on the island, so it is just irritating. Thankfully, Bea has a treatment to keep us from going off.”

“Wait. You are an omega?”

Quin chuckled. “Yeah. It’s in my mark and everything. Anyway, when we got free access to education, I looked up cartoons and artworks that filled me with wonder. I made the roc, dragons, leviathans. Things that were large enough to take me away and have room for all of my sisters.”

Xeva got it. “You didn’t want to be in that position again.”

“No, I didn’t. When I wake in a cold sweat, I am in that transport and then standing next to it terrified that the government is coming to take us back to the lab or worse.”

Xeva took her hand. “I understand that as well.”

“So, you wanted to defend yourself so no one could hurt you again. Hence, the knight. A creature of honour and defense. Fast, sturdy, and you have excellent close attacks.”

“And the hoofbeats scare my enemies.”

Quin smiled. “So, you have never had a heat?”

“No.”

“Interesting. I am guessing that they blocked you, and I know they blocked Nelith.”

“How do you know that?”

“I asked her if I could examine her. She said yes.” Quin laughed. “She’s been altered, but it won’t affect her ability to have kids of her own. Her ovaries just needed a kick start at her request.”

Xeva paused and then asked, “Can you check me?”

Quin shrugged. “Sure. Lie down on the chaise.”

The exam was direct, and Quin’s eyes glowed as she did the exam, seeing beneath skin and bone.

“You have the same block. Do you want it fixed?”

“Please.”

Quin nodded and worked with the telekinesis that they all seemed to have. “There is going to be a pinch.”

The strange snapping inside her made Xeva feel strange. There was pain and then a rush of warmth.

Quin focused, and finally, she lifted her head and nodded. “You will have one cycle this week, and then you will have to find your normal. Thankfully, they were fairly simple. You just had a tubal ligation. They still wanted your ovaries for future materials.”

“But they are good now?”
