Logan was standing too close to Avery and whispered in her ear as she giggled. He must have said something uncool because Avery stuck her hand out in front of his face, rolled her eyes, and then walked away.

I was thankful that Sarah and Hailey were on the dance floor with their prom dates and didn't see what had happened. But by that time, I was fuming and marched over to Logan.

"How dare you flirt with Avery Monroe on prom night! You are an embarrassment!" I barked at him.

I smelled the liquor on Logan's breath when he chuckled and said, "I wasn't flirting, and I'm not embarrassed. If you are, then that's your problem."

I balled my hands into fists, wanting to punch him in the nose. "Take me home now!"

He rolled his eyes, and as I turned from him, he said, "Okay, I'll take you home, Eleanor."

I spun back around and jabbed my finger into his chest, "Do NOT call me Eleanor, you stupid prick!"

I left him standing there and walked over to the dancefloor to tell Sarah and Hailey that I had started my period and was cramping badly and that Logan was taking me home. I didn't want to ruin prom night for two best friends and make a scene. I'd fill them in on the details another day.

I said nothing in Logan's car as he drove me toward my house. I stared out the side window as my throat hurt and my stomach was tied in knots. I was angry, hurt, bitter, and sad. Raindrops began to sprinkle the windshield, and Logan turned the wipers on. We arrived in my neighborhood, but anxiety and a little bit of fear crept into my gut when Logan turned the car down the street before mine and toward the lot next to the playground and soccer field.

"Where are we going? I told you to take me home!" I stammered. Was Logan a Jekyll and Hyde type? Mr. Nice Guy one moment, then psychopath the next?

When Logan parked the car, the rain began to pour heavily.

He put the car in park and then turned to me. "Let's talk, Elle."

I glared at him, folding my arms. There was a long silence, only the rain pelting on the car's windshield, roof, and hood.

I yelped when Logan grabbed and pulled me to him, then smashed his mouth over mine. I struggled against him as his hand grabbed at my left breast.

Luckily, I pulled away quickly, freeing myself from his grip, and smacked him hard across his cheek.

"Damit Elle!" He yelled as he touched his cheek. "You don't have to play the innocent virgin with me. I know you've been spreading your legs for Billy Cooper and have been his slut since the ninth grade!"

I ripped the corsage off my wrist and threw it in his face. "Go fuck yourself, Logan Peabody. I hope your dick rots and falls off!"

I opened the car door and climbed out as the rain poured. I slammed it shut and began to walk home. I heard Logan start his car, then speed past me, leaving me alone in the dark and rainy night.

I was soaking wet, and my blue dress was ruined like prom night. I rounded the corner toward my street, my face soaked with rain and tears, when I saw the Ford Ranger parked in front of my house.

Billy.

He climbed out of the truck, shouted my name, and ran toward me.

I cried out, and when we collided, Billy crushed me against him with his strong arms. "What happened, Elle? Are you okay? Where's Logan?"

I clenched the front of his black t-shirt and sobbed.

I looked up and saw the torment and fear in his dark eyes.

"Logan is a prick, and I'm okay. Now that you're here." I said.

"Did he hurt you, Elle? By god, I will fuck his ass up if he did!"

"No, I'm okay. Why are you here?"

He stepped back, holding onto my arms, and his look of sadness was breaking my heart.

"I graduated high school and got my diploma. But I'm not attending the graduation ceremony because I joined the Marine Corps. I'm taking a bus to Parris Island in South Carolina tomorrow for basic training." Billy said it so fast, like ripping off a bandaid, hoping it wouldn't hurt as much when he spoke it. "Thank you, Elle, for helping me all those times with homework; otherwise, I couldn't have graduated. And thank you for being a good friend -"

I cut him off, "I love you, Billy Cooper!" Then, I grabbed his t-shirt and smashed my lips against his.
