“Ghost Moon Manor?”

“Yes.”

Jinx, who was normally so effusive with information and details suddenly seemed reluctant to speak.

“Which of the colonies?” Salem asked.

“Massachusetts,” answered Jinx.

Connecting the dates with the colony, she asked, “Do you know the surname of the sisters and the town they came from?” Jinx hesitated. Salem got up and came around the desk, kneeling down and taking Jinx’s hands in hers. “Tell me.”

Jinx looked deeply into her eyes. “Their family name was Hubbard, and they were from Salem.”

Salem felt as if someone had knocked the wind out of her as she rocked back on her heels.

“No one needs to know, Salem. I won’t tell anyone, and I’ll destroy the files. We can get you to the Shadow Sisters.”

“What do you expect me to do, run?”

“Most people—human or shifter—would. This is a dire prophecy. It doesn’t say which side will win, only that the world will either be plunged into darkness or teeter back into the light. I don’t think you’re meant to bring down the Shadow League itself, but to deal them the first of the fatal blows that will. The anointed couple will be the downfall of the vampires—at least as far as the Shadow League is concerned. I think you and Cullen are the couple. The gossip in the pack is that Cullen believes you to be his fated mate.”

“Oh no,” said Salem. “Dani warned me about that fated mate shit.”

“I don’t know that you can do much about it. It’s kind of a done deal.”

“And Cullen is…” Cullen came through the door, startling both the women. “You could have knocked,” said Salem.

“Last time I checked, I was alpha, and this was my study,” he said closing the door behind him.

“Of course you are, Alpha. No one doubts that,” said Jinx, covering for her.

Salem had always prided herself on her ability to process information quickly, draw the right conclusions, act decisively, and keep her cards close to her chest.

‘Fated Mate.’ That was what Dani had talked about, warning her that male shifters, especially alphas, could be unrelenting in pursuit of the female they believed fated to be with them. If the pack knew, then Cullen knew and had kept that information from her.

Dani had warned her to think twice about becoming involved with a shifter who believed her to be his fated mate. Warrick had been angry when Dani had warned her off, pointing out that their fated bond had saved his life and delivered her into his arms. Salem had never even thought of being locked into that kind of life. But would it be so bad? And if it was part of a prophecy that could help defeat the evil that was the Shadow League, did she really have a choice? God, she hated feeling the burden of responsibility; it made her feel as if she had no choice at all.

She decided she would keep the information to herself until she either figured out what she wanted, or she had no other choice.

Salem smiled brightly at Cullen. “Jinx was telling me she thinks she’s found a way into the encrypted files, but it may take a day or two. Isn’t that right, Jinx?”

“At least. Could take longer, but I’ll keep working on it. I’ll leave you two alone,” Jinx said, leaving the room.

“Is everything all right?” Cullen asked, genuine concern in his voice.

“Yes. Any chance we could eat upstairs in your room?”

“Our room,” he corrected.

“Cullen…”

“Shh. I’m not pressing you. Let’s go upstairs and just unwind. I need to get lost in the ecstasy of you.”

Salem followed him up the stairs, wondering what the hell she was going to do.
