CULLEN

Cullen tended to the estate and pack business, coming and going from his office while Jinx and Salem continued to hack into files and servers the SPU had never intended for anyone to see. On one of his return trips to his office, Salem leaned her head back, lifting it to him for a kiss he was happy to give her.

“Cullen, do you think you might be able to get Colby to join us? Jinx seems to think he has access to information neither we nor the SPU have.”

“Funny you should ask that. They came across some information they downloaded from the lab in Reykjavik. He thought we should see it, so he’s headed our way. He should be here around lunchtime. He said it talked about a ritual, which made no sense to them, but as we were talking the pieces began to fit.”

“What happened to the tigress and the snow leopard?” asked Jinx.

“Somehow, they just disappeared. Lucian is raising holy hell,” answered Cullen.

“Has anybody been able to figure out why they had all those prisoners?” asked Salem.

Cullen turned his full attention to her. “What do you mean?”

“Just that. I get that Payne was there spying for Colby. Even then, why didn’t they kill him? Or at least question or torture him?”

“Payne brought that up. They didn’t seem to know who he was.”

“Know or care?”

Jinx piped up. “Since it was vamps, were they looking to use them as feeders?”

Cullen shook his head. “No one was bitten.” He glanced at his watch. “I need to do some things before Colby gets here. Do either of you need anything from me?”

“No. I think we’re good. We’ll see you at lunch.”

After kissing her again, he headed out, only to be met by Shaw. “What’s up?”

“We have an ETA from Reynolds. He gave me a heads up that Hendrix is on the warpath. He suggested we increase our patrols.”

Cullen nodded. “I don’t think that would hurt. I want to know where the she-wolves are at all times.”

“Do you think he’d kidnap one of our she-wolves in retaliation?”

“No, but I think he’d take one of them hostage to try and force us to give Zenya back.”

“Zenya?”

“Yes—the tigress who asked to not be returned.” Cullen started to say something when his phone rang. “Speak of the devil.” He answered the phone. “Hello, Lucian…”

“Where is she, Manchester?” the white tiger asked.

“I haven’t a clue. We found her languishing in a dank prison cell. We rescued her and took half of the prisoners to Windsong, and half remained here. She went to Windsong, and I understand from Colby that she has disappeared.”

“Zenya belongs to me. I want her returned.”

“If you were so concerned, how did the vampires come to have her?”

Lucian roared on the other end of the line. “Damn you, Manchester. I will have her back.”

“Then I suggest you look elsewhere. But I would also suggest you look into why she didn’t want to be returned.”

Only silence emanated from the other side before the call ended.

“He could be trouble.”

“If he wants to make a challenge, he is welcome to do so. But as I said, let’s increase our patrol.”
