After one last glance around, Jade picked up her bag and left the room, flicking off the light and closing the door behind her.

She carried it out to the main room and set it on the floor near the couch.

Jade flopped backward into a seated position on the couch and settled in to wait for everyone else.

Ryker watched her with amusement from the table, sipping a coffee.

“Baseball cap. Classic call,” he said.

“You know it. It’s the ultimate rockstar disguise. No one will ever suspect that I’m me.”

He chuckled.

Jade leaned her head back and closed her eyes. Less than a minute later, Lyra brought her suitcase out and settled down beside Jade.

“Whose idea was this 5 a.m. thing? Remind me to fire them,” Lyra said.

“I second that,” Jade said, eyes still closed. “Off with their heads.”

Lyra wrapped her arms around Jade, leaned her head against Jade’s shoulder, and closed her eyes, too.

They carried on their conversation, both sounding half-dead to the world.

“Mornin’, babe.”

“Mornin’, Lyr.”

“How’d you sleep?”

“Fine, but not enough. Oh yeah, and Mr. Blue Eyes said there are paparazzi outside.”

Lyra yawned, then said, “Thanks for the heads-up, Mr. Blue Eyes. You’re the best.”

Even though she couldn’t see him, Jade could hear the amusement in Ryker’s voice when he said, “Anytime.”

“Can we keep him?” Jade asked.

“That’s m‘kay with me,” Lyra said. “Even if he’s too serious, at least he’s sexy.”

Ryker burst out laughing.

“You ladies are great for a guy’s ego,” he said with a chuckle.

“That’s saying a lot, because his ego is already enormous. He’s totally into you,” Lyra said.

Jade popped an eye open to gauge Ryker’s reaction to Lyra’s bluntness and found him watching her. When he raised his eyebrow and licked his lips before taking a drink of his coffee, Jade could tell Lyra’s comment rang true. Ryker was into her.

Even so, he already told her he wouldn’t act on his feelings while he was her security. His “firm policy” and all. But maybe when all this was over...

“I’ll report back once I find that out for sure,” Jade said.

Ryker laughed again.

“You’re in a good mood this morning,” she said, opening both eyes to watch him. “I’ve gotten at least half a dozen laughs out of you, and you haven’t scowled at me once.”

“Yeah, well, I’m told a good comedian brings that out of people,” he deadpanned. “I have a comedic rockstar in my presence. I’m golden.”

“Damn straight. Glad you’re seeing the light, Mr. Vittroli.”
