Jade hadn’t heard Ryker approach and she jumped when he growled in her ear, “You could tempt a saint.”

She turned and smiled at him.

“You sayin’ you’re a saint?”

He scoffed and shook his head. “I’m no saint.”

She quirked her eyebrow. “So you’re sayin’ I don’t tempt you?”

He narrowed his eyes at her. “Don’t put words in my mouth. Nothing — no one — tempts me more than you. But I can’t act on that until we catch your stalker.”

“I think you can. I’m safer with you around than without.”

“You are safer with me around, yes, but I’m not doing my job if I’m more focused on how gorgeous your ass looks in those jeans than on monitoring the area.”

“We need to reach a compromise because you’re killing me here.”

His face softened and he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“Right now, I can only offer friendship. It’s too dangerous for me to offer anything else.”

Jade sighed. “Fine.”

“I brought you presents if that makes a difference.”

“Maybe.” She glanced down at the shopping bag. “What are they”

Ryker reached into his pocket. He fished around for something then pulled his hand out. He extended his palm to show her a pair of stud earrings with subtle black gemstones.

“These are fitted with tracking locators. Wear them at all times. Please. If we get separated, they will help us find you.”

“Okay.”

Jade had three piercings in her ears. She reached up and removed a pair of the studs she was already wearing. She took the earrings from Ryker and put them in.

She deposited her other earrings into the drawer for her bunk.

“Done. What next?”

He reached into the bag. “Next, we have to hide your most recognizable trademark.” He pulled out a brunette wig.

“I’ll probably stand out even more wearing that.”

“Humor me.” He held it out to her, along with a mesh wig cap.

Jade took both and went into the bathroom. She had to admit, the wig looked natural, even as she held it in her hands.

Jade set the wig on the sink, twisted her hair up to against the back of her head, and pulled the wig cap onto her head. After a little adjusting, the cap successfully corralled her rainbow tresses and mostly flattened them.

She eased the wig onto her head, starting at the front and working it on carefully. It fit comfortably, and was snug enough that it should remain in place for Segway riding. The color and shape framed her face well and looked natural. The hairline’s part sat different from her usual, which was probably a good thing. Though she needed to brush it, it was a flattering wig that transformed her look.

She turned to face him. “What do you think?”

“Much better than your rockstar disguise.” His eyes roamed over her appreciatively as he reached into the bag again. This time, he pulled out a pair of black frame Wayfarer glasses and held them out to her. “These are plain glass, not prescription.”

She slid them onto her face and glanced at the mirror. She did a double-take when she saw how different the glasses made her look. Talk about transformation.

“What else do you have in that bag of tricks?” she asked.
