He laughed. “Nothing, that’s it. But I think those are effective enough.”

“How did you get this stuff so fast?”

“My team works with a stylist to create disguises for some of our high-profile clients. I called her after we agreed to take this job. She sent some items for you. We got them yesterday so I thought you might like to try them out today.”

“Awesome. She nailed it.”

“She’s the best.”

“I see that. Can you hand me my hairbrush? It’s in the shower kit on my bunk.”

“Sure.”

Ryker grabbed the brush out of her kit and set the empty bag on her bunk. When he passed the brush to her, his fingers grazed hers. She glanced at him. He gave her a small smile.

She turned to the mirror and gently brushed the wig so the strands fell into place.

The wig and glasses completely changed her look. She loved it.

“This could work,” she said.

“You look great. Ready to go?”

“Sure am.”

Ryker walked toward the lounge. Jade tossed her hairbrush on her bunk, slipped her shoes on, and followed him.

She popped her head around the corner into the lounge.

“How do I look?”

Bex and Lyra paused their game.

“Damn. Who are you?” Bex teased.

“Ooh lah lah.” Lyra clapped her hands. “The sexy nerd look suits you well. You look great! I would walk right past you without recognizing you — and I’m your bestie so that’s crazy! Nice work, Mr. Blue Eyes.”

Ryker nodded at her.

Jade walked through the lounge to Ryker’s side.

“Thanks, Lyr. We’ll be back in time for soundcheck.”

“Okay, have fun!”

Jade followed Ryker through the curtain and down the steps. She couldn’t wait to see what he had planned for this excursion.

Chapter 10

Jade

“The Segway will mostly balance itself,” their guide said. “Hold onto the handlebars at all times. Lean slightly forward to move forward, lean backward to back up, and stand straight and center your weight to stop.” He demonstrated. “Think of it as steering with your hips and make sure your hips are pointed in the direction you want to travel. The farther you lean, the faster you move, so keep your movements gradual. Try it.”

The guide, Stefan, lined them up in the parking lot outside their office — Jade and Ryker plus two senior citizen couples who adored the two of them.

Stefan first had them put on helmets, which would be a struggle for Jade with her wig, so Ryker helped. He played the part of her loving boyfriend who helped properly position and fasten her helmet first. When he dropped a soft kiss to her cheek and said, “There you go, sweetness. All safe and sound,” the seniors melted. Even though she knew it was an act, Jade’s heart beat a little faster when he did that.

Jade leaned forward and her Segway rolled forward. She was surprised by how solid it felt under her feet, despite being two wheels mounted to a motorized platform with handlebars.
