“I can give you the last number I had for her, but I don’t know if it’s good anymore.”

“That’d be great. Thank you.”

He wrote it down as she read it off to him.

“You doing okay, Ryker? I worry about you. I’m still upset about how Lila’s treated you.”

“Yeah, I’m good. Actually, I met someone. It’s really soon, but I think I can be happy with her. That’s why I need to talk to Lila.”

“Finally. It’s about time you divorce Lila. You let her get away with her shit for long enough. She may be my daughter, but you’re just as much my son, and she’s done you wrong. You’re a good man, honey. You deserve the best, and I’m happy to hear you found someone.”

“Thank you.”

“I expect you to keep in touch. I’m not getting any younger and I don’t see you often enough. Oooooooh, slip me a wedding invite when it’s time. It’s not every day one of my sons gets married, and I want to meet the woman who finally captured your heart. Don’t worry, I’ll leave Lila at home.”

Ryker laughed. “Okay, Momma. I will. Call me if you need anything. You know my number.”

“You know I will. Love you, Ryker. Take care.”

“You, too. Love you too. Bye.”

“Bye.”

Ryker clicked off the call on his landline phone then dialed in Lila’s number.

It rang a few times, then he heard, “Hello, this is Lila.”

“Hey Lila, it’s Ryker. I—”

“Ha! Fooled you! Leave me a message and maybe I’ll call you back. Mwah!” Her voicemail ended with a kissy noise.

Ryker rolled his eyes.

Lila had changed so much since they were teens. She was no longer the sweet, creative woman he’d married who had dreamed of being a writer. Now, she was a flighty, unpredictable mess, and didn’t care how her actions affected others. He’d tried to make things work, but they’d finally agreed they wanted different things out of life and gone their separate ways.

“Hey Lila, it’s Ryker. I need to talk to you ASAP. Call me, please. It’s important.” He rattled off the landline number and his cell number.

He hung up the phone. His next call should probably be to a lawyer to find out what he had to do if he couldn’t locate her.

Jade rounded the corner from the hallway.

She said, “Were you talking to your mom? I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, but I was on my way to the bathroom and heard you say ‘Momma.’”

“Kind of. I was talking to Lila’s mom. She’s technically my mother-in-law, but she’s been a second mom to me for most of my life. Everyone calls her Momma. It’s her chosen nickname.”

“Ah, okay.”

“Momma wants an invite to our wedding, by the way.”

Jade laughed. “Momma’s a character, huh?”

“That’s an understatement.”

“Is she going to cause a scene and accuse me of stealing you from her daughter?”

Ryker laughed. “No. She’s more likely to escort me up the aisle and give me to you. She wants me to be happy. She said it’s not every day one of her sons gets married, and she wants to meet the woman who finally captured my heart.”

“Aww, that’s so sweet. Okay, she can come.”
