“You’re welcome, sweetness. I’m happy you’re enjoying your time here.”

She settled between his legs and leaned back against his chest. He wrapped his body around hers and held her close as they watched the sun sink with the most beautiful reds and purples she’d ever witnessed. The sunset over the lake was truly stunning.

It made her feel sentimental and want to know more about the man she was falling for.

“Ryker?”

“Hmm?”

“Want to play twenty questions?”

“Nah, let’s do our own thing. Ask me whatever you want to know, baby. It doesn’t have to be a game.”

“What’s your favorite band?”

“Besides yours?” he teased.

She rolled her eyes. “Okay, fine. Your second favorite band.”

“I listen to a pretty eclectic mix. Mainly hard rock and metal, but anything else that I find catchy, too. Avenged Sevenfold is my usual go-to.”

“Nice, I like a lot of their stuff, too. I realize I’m in a punk band but I listen to a little of everything. Deep down, I’m a Black Veil Brides chick. I was a fan in college and always come back to them. I love their lead singer’s voice. He’s my fave, even his solo work as ‘Andy Black’ which is a totally different sound. I really admire him for trying something on the side as a solo project but remaining true to his origins.”

“Have you ever met him?”

“Not yet, but I hope to someday. He seems like a great guy. I used to watch his talk show ‘The Andy Show’ all the time. I’m seriously a huge fan.”

“Maybe you can tell him in person one day.”

“Maybe. A rockstar chick can hope.” She laughed. “What’s your favorite book?”

“‘The Lord of the Rings.’ It’s been my favorite since I was a kid.”

“Always a classic. Mine’s ‘The Phantom Tollbooth.’ It’s technically a kid’s book but it’s got a lot of wordplay and crazy adventure. It basically emphasizes the need to love learning via a fantasy world with places like the Doldrums and Dictionopolis. I enjoyed it even more as an adult than I did in middle school.”

“Noted. I’ll check it out sometime.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek.

“You’ve met my best friend Lyra. Who’s your best friend?”

“Either Roark or Drake. We’ve been friends since we went through BUD/S training together.”

“How’s Drake doing?”

“He’s fine. Giving his physical therapist hell, I’m sure. He said Lyra’s been calling to check in on him regularly.”

“Really? She hasn’t said anything to me.”

“Yeah, I get the sense that something may be simmering with those two. You may be planning their wedding next.” He brushed his fingers through her hair.

“I’m sorry Lyra attacked you after the whole wedding talk thing. We were teasing. I never expected the conversation to escalate like that. She... well, she loves me and was trying to protect me.”

“It’s okay, sweetness. I should’ve said something about Lila before. I don’t blame either of you for how you reacted. I’m glad you have someone like Lyra in your corner who’s willing to fight for you.” He kissed below her ear. “You’ve got me now, too. I’ll fight for you.”

“I appreciate that, but, usually, I try to fight my own battles.”

“Then I’ll fight beside you. Or stay in your corner if that’s what you want.”

“Thanks, Ry. I appreciate that. I’ve always got your back, too. We’ll be a great team.”
