She subtly adjusted Ryker’s gun, which she’d “borrowed” from the nightstand, in the waistband of her jeans.

She waved off the taxi driver and walked up the sidewalk. She couldn’t see any movement inside the house.

Jade put her foot on the first rickety step, and something whacked her head — hard.

She fell to the ground, and the last thing she remembered before she passed out was a pair of familiar boots standing in front of her.

“Wake up!” Someone slapped Jade across the face.

“Fuck,” she cursed and opened her eyes. She quickly slammed them shut again, though. Her vision was blurry, and she felt dizzy and nauseated. She definitely had a concussion.

She tried to raise her hands to her face, but quickly discovered that she was duct-taped to a chair and her hands were secured behind her back.

“Look at me when I talk to you, bitch!” a rough voice growled.

Jade peeked an eye open. She didn’t recognize the man standing before her.

Her vision cleared a little and she could see that the man looked like a stereotypical street thug.

“Who are you?” she asked.

“I ask the questions here. Where’s your bodyguard?”

“Not sure. Last saw him at my hotel.”

“You tell him anything?”

“I took his gun and left in the middle of the night. What do you think?”

Another slap across her cheek.

Bright lights danced before her eyes and she hissed.

“You better not be lying.”

Jade shut her eyes and stayed silent.

“That’s right, keep your trap shut. If you don’t, we’ll gag that pretty mouth of yours.”

We? Jade didn’t like the sound of that.

“That gun you had — It’s my gun now. Be good, or I’ll have to use it on you. I’d hate to shoot such a pretty girl when there are so many better options.”

She gasped when she felt the cold metal of a gun touch her cheek. He dragged it slowly down her face to her mouth like a demented caress, then roughly shoved the tip between her lips.

She cried out in surprise then froze as the gun barrel slid further into her mouth. The metallic taste overwhelmed her senses.

A thousand thoughts ran through her head at once. This guy was crazy. She might die today. What if he raped her? What had he done with Lyra? Had she suffered? Was she still alive? Would they make it out of this? Would she ever see Ryker again? Could he find her in time? No, not only her...them. She couldn’t believe Lyra was dead. Could he find THEM in time?

His cell phone chimed from his pocket.

She kept her eyes squeezed shut and held her breath while he checked his messages with one hand and kept the gun lodged in her mouth with the other.

He growled. “Boss calls. Damn, and this was getting good. We’ll definitely pick this up later.”

He jammed the gun toward the back of her throat and gagged her, then pulled it from her mouth.
