Ryker watched Lila approach the steps of her apartment building, where he stood waiting outside the door.

She looked at her phone as she strode confidently up the street. When she finally reached the bottom step, she reached into her purse to pull out her keys without even glancing up.

Her brunette hair was professionally styled at shoulder length and her skirt suit fit her curves well. She looked good, healthy — almost like the Lila he’d known before drugs and wanderlust overtook her.

“Lila,” he said.

Her head whipped up and a grin crossed her face. “Ryker!”

She ran up the remaining steps and threw her arms around him.

He hugged her but also scolded her. “You didn’t even notice me until I spoke to you — and by then you were only a few feet away. You have to be more aware of your surroundings. You could get hurt.”

“Oh, I’m fine. It’s broad daylight and you aren’t a threat to me. Why are you here?”

“Let’s talk inside.” He gestured toward the door.

She hesitated. “There’s something I need to tell you before we go up to my apartment.”

“I know you live with a boyfriend if that’s what you’re worried about.”

She laughed. “Of course you know. What was I even thinking? You probably already ran a background check and everything.”

She unlocked the door and led him inside to the elevator. They stepped inside and she pressed the button for the fourth floor.

“I did. Marshall Allen Westbury. He’s clean except for the massive amount of pirated movies he streams. You might want to talk to him about that.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’ll mention it.”

The corner of his mouth lifted. “How have you been?”

“Good. Definitely on the up. I’ve been with Marshall for about three months now. I moved in with him last month when I got a job at the local newspaper. I’ve decided to stay here for a while and see where this goes.”

The elevator arrived at her floor, and they stepped off.

Ryker said, “That’s great. I’m happy for you.”

Relief visibly crossed her face. “Good. I was worried you were here to give me shit about it.”

“I want you to find happiness, Lila. I’m sorry that wasn’t with me, but if this Marshall guy makes you happy, that’s what matters.”

She put her key into the door and let them into the apartment. It was small but clean. Ryker could tell a bachelor originally set the place up, but Lila had added some feminine touches.

They shut the door and Lila led the way across the room. They sat down across from each other at a small kitchen table.

“Thank you. I appreciate you saying that. But if that’s not why you’re here, then why are you here, Ryk?” she asked.

“I think you know why I’m here. I found my happiness, too. So I have a very important question to ask you.”

“Okay.”

Her eyes widened as he reached into his jacket pocket, his actions almost identical to the time he’d proposed to her. This time, though, instead of a black box, he pulled out an envelope, which he placed on the table, and slid across to her.

“Will you divorce me?” he asked.

Lila burst out laughing and nodded. “Yes. Yes, Ryker. I will divorce you.”

“Excellent.” He tapped the envelope. “All the paperwork is in here. I had a lawyer draw it up. It should be fairly straightforward but if you want to have a lawyer review it and send it back to me once you’ve signed, that’s fine.”
