“Oh god,” her mom said. “I got him a juicer for Christmas. He thinks it can do no wrong. I’m sorry.”

Bex tossed her duffle bag onto the bottom stair and walked into the kitchen. A juicer stood on the counter and three cups of green juice sat in front of it.

Her dad’s brown hair was combed into place and he grinned as he handed out the cups. “Maybe we can market this. I think it’s my best yet.”

He took a swig and grinned.

Bex’s mom shot her a look, plugged her nose, and downed the cup. “Not bad, honey.”

Bex looked at the green mess in her cup and cringed. Tentatively and against her better judgement, she took a sip. Hmmm. Not great but not horrible. Mainly, the kale was overpowering.

“Uh, I think we need to work on ratios. Too much kale,” she said.

“Huh, really?”

She nodded and rinsed the rest of her juice down the sink.

“Darn, I thought I had it,” her dad said.

“I’m going to head up to my room and settle in,” she said.

Her parents nodded. “Okay, honey,” her mom said.

Bex left the kitchen, picked up her duffle bag, and climbed the stairs to her room.

She went through the door, tossed her bag on the floor, and plopped onto her bed.

Not much had changed since she left. Posters from her favorite bands in high school lined the walls. Same black comforter. A familiar framed photo of Aiden and Bex on the bedside table.

Bex sighed when she noticed. Memories. She grabbed the photo and shoved it into a drawer.

She settled onto her pillow and closed her eyes.

Would Aiden attend the reunion? What would she say to him if he did?

When they were together, they’d had their problems but they’d been happy. Where would they be now if they’d stayed together?

Bex sighed and stared at the ceiling. As she watched the shadows on the ceiling, she made up her mind: if Aiden was single, she would win him back. She missed him.

A few weeks later

Bex combed her hair and put the finishing touches on her makeup. She looked fantastic in her little black dress — which she wore in hopes of seeing Aiden.

She finished in the bathroom and headed downstairs to the kitchen. She sat at a stool along the kitchen island. Her dad stood at the sink, washing dishes. Her mom’s head poked into the fridge.

“Oh hey, Bex,” her mom said, closing the door. She crossed the room and sat across from Bex at the island. “You ready for tonight?”

“We’ll see. How fun it is will depend on who shows up.”

“Very true. When I went to my reunion, no one I knew attended. I was by myself all night. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen to you.”

“I know Erica will be there but I don’t know about anyone else.” She hoped Aiden would be there.

“Well, good luck! I hope it works out for you.”

“Thanks.”
