“Tonight is the night your father and I have symphony tickets. We don’t have a spare key. The hide-a-rock key got lost a long time ago. But maybe we can leave one of our keys for you.”

“Nah,” Bex said. “Don’t worry about it. I’m planning to get drunk. I’ll stay in town tonight at a hotel and meet you here tomorrow after you’re back.

“We’ll be back late. It’s going to be probably 4 or 5 tomorrow afternoon.”

“That’s fine. I’ll crash at a hotel. I’d probably lose a key anyway.”

“Okay, as long as you’re sure.”

“I am. It’s no big deal.”

“Okay good. We’re going to leave in about an hour,” her mom said.

“That works out perfectly. I’m leaving as soon as my Uber gets here.”

“Well, good. I’m glad that works out.”

Bex’s phone pinged, alerting her that her Uber driver was nearby.

“Have fun, guys. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Bex stood up from her stool and shoved her phone into her pocket beside her wallet.

“Sounds good, be careful, honey,” her mom said. Her dad nodded.

Bex headed outside to wait.

She walked to the street to wait by the curb. When the Uber car pulled up, she climbed into the backseat.

The female driver immediately recognized her. “Hey, I know you! You’re the lead singer from that band, aren’t you?”

“Nope, just a girl going to her high school reunion.” Bex tried to deter her.

“No, you are. My boyfriend has your poster on his wall. I’d recognize you anywhere. Your hair’s just not spiked.”

Bex laughed nervously. “Okay, you got me. I’m Bex of Lovely Oblivion. I’d love to sign an autograph for you once we get to the school.”

Luckily, the driver took her seriously, though Bex did see her snap a few candid selfies with her phone. She drove to the high school gym, where the class was hosting the reunion.

The driver passed a marker and a hoodie back to Bex. She signed the hoodie. Bex handed it back to her and hopped out of the car before she could ask for anything else. “Here you go!”

Bex hurried up the back walkway and into the gymnasium doors. The smell of the high school slammed her and memories from years ago followed. She staggered backward a step when they hit. Quickly, she got it under control, shook her head, and looked around. A welcome table sat inside the door with two attendants. People lingered around the gym in groups, drinking from disposable cups. Tables and chairs were randomly dispersed. A makeshift bar with stools sat under the basketball hoop, which seemed to be the source for the disposable cups.

“Bex!” one of the attendants shouted.

She closed the door and crossed over to them.

“Hi,” she said.

One of them checked her off on a clipboard containing the list of attendees. The other handed her a name badge with her name labeled in Sharpie. She stuck it on.

“Is Aiden Whittaker here yet?” she asked, curiosity getting the better of her.

“No, we didn’t even get a reservation from him.” Her heart sank. She’d really hoped to see him.

“What about Erica Levitt?”

The attendee nodded at the clipboard. “She’s checked in.”

“Okay, thanks.”
