He regretted that break up with his whole heart, but it was in Bex’s best interest.

Aiden sighed, shook his head, and turned down the comforter. When he finished, he went to the bedroom door, turned the knob, and entered the hallway. He flicked lights on as he walked through the house, following the familiar route downstairs.

He unlocked and opened the front door, leaving it open as he walked off the front porch and headed across the yard to his car.

Bex still slept with her head tilted against the backseat, her mouth slightly open.

Aiden smiled and unlocked the door.

He unfastened her seatbelt then slid his arms under her so he could carry her. As he lifted her from the car, she snuggled into his chest.

He kicked the car door shut and crossed the yard, holding Bex in his arms. The woman weighed next to nothing.

He carried her up the steps and through the front door, which he shouldered shut behind them. He climbed the stairs with her cozied in his arms.

Gently, Aiden laid her on the bed. She didn’t wake, but snuggled into the pillow.

Aiden tugged off her shoes and tossed them on the floor. He pulled her phone out of her pocket and went to plug it in. When he noticed it had a fingerprint scanner, he hesitated, but then made the impulsive decision to use her finger to unlock it. He quickly called himself so he would have her number, then locked her phone again and plugged it in on her nightstand.

He turned her on her side and propped some pillows behind her back to keep her from rolling over before pulling the comforter over her. When he was sure she was comfy and wouldn’t hurt herself if she got sick in her sleep, he went in search of a trash can, a glass of water, and some Advil. She would need the Advil in the morning.

He left the trash can by the bed, and the meds on her nightstand, along with a quickly scrawled note on a scrap of paper.

He kissed her forehead. “Night, Bex.”

“Night, Aiden,” she mumbled in her sleep.

He smiled. At least she finally recognized him.

With that, he locked up the house and left her to sleep off the alcohol.

Chapter 6

Bex

The second she woke up, Bex’s head throbbed like a marching band traipsed through it.

She groaned and closed her eyes.

She never drank that much, and she definitely regretted it.

When she finally pried her eyes open, she squinted at the ceiling and realized she was in her childhood bedroom.

How did she get back here from the reunion? She didn’t even have a key and planned to stay the night at a hotel since her parents wouldn’t be back until late.

She sat up slowly and turned to get out of bed. The digital clock read 1:34 pm. That’s when she noticed the water and Advil beside the clock on the bedside table. Hallelujah.

She gladly opened the bottle of Advil and used the water to gulp down a couple of them. The water tasted so good to her dry mouth, she finished the glass.

Her head throbbed, and she seriously hoped the meds kicked in fast.

Bex sat the empty glass on the table and reached for her phone, which is when she noticed the note.

Picking it up, she read: Bex, please call me. Aiden

He’d scrawled his number underneath his signature.

She groaned and fell back onto her bed. That explained so much. Aiden brought her home during the shitshow of her drunken stupor. Of course he did. That was why she was in her childhood home, even though she brought no keys. He probably got in through her window like he did in high school.
