“I’m here for a few more weeks, then I have to leave for another tour.”

“Okay, I can work with that.”

“What do you mean?”

“We’re going out. As friends,” he added quickly.

“Oh, we are, are we?” She raised an eyebrow. Her heart beat a little faster at the thought of going anywhere with him.

“Yes, ma’am,” he answered, also raising an eyebrow.

“And when are we going out?”

“Tonight.”

“Confident, aren’t you? What if I’m busy tonight?”

He smirked. “Are you busy tonight?”

“That’s beside the point. You didn’t ask if I’m free; you assumed I am.”

He laughed. “Bex, are you free to go out with me, as friends, tonight?”

“Depends. What time? And will your wife care?”

“I work until 7:30 so let’s say 8:00,” he said. “And what wife?”

“I’m busy at 8:00. And you’re wearing a ring.”

“Busy doing what?” He flexed his left hand and looked at the band impartially.

“Rummy night with the neighborhood gossip group. It’s mom’s night to host, and said host requires my presence.”

“Ahhhh.” A mischievous grin lit up his face.

That look did naughty things to her... He used to get the same look before they snuck off for privacy together as teens. She tried to ignore her hardening nipples as she looked at him. Her body still responded so easily to him.

“I’ll pick you up tonight. Make an appearance for a bit, then we’ll head out. That ought to be enough to start the circle’s tongues wagging,” he said.

“Why would we want to do that? Won’t your wife care?”

“I’m not married. This is to deter crazy chicks. Everyone important knows I’m not married.” He gestured at the ring. “We’ll do it to keep them guessing, of course. Will they? Won’t they? All that fun.”

“But we won’t,” she said. “Friends, remember?”

“We know that, but they don’t. It will be a gossip game for them. We can keep them guessing for months.”

Her food arrived then, the plate brought by someone who worked in the kitchen. The scent of fried eggs, sausage, and fresh bacon flooded her senses and her stomach rumbled on sight.

“Thank you,” Bex said. “This looks delicious.”

Aiden thanked his co-worker, who smiled, said, “Welcome, bud,” and headed to the kitchen.

“Hey, buddy,” Bex called. The guy turned back. “Is he married?” She pointed at Aiden.

The guy laughed. “No. He wears a wedding band to scare off excited chicks but the dude doesn’t do relationships. Not married, probably never will be. I’m not sure he’s even had a girlfriend.”

Aiden huffed under his breath.
