Aiden turned off the main road to the side road that led toward the fairgrounds. The lights of the ferris wheel and other fair attractions grew larger the closer they got to them.

Bex’s excitement grew. She hadn’t been to a fair as a spectator in years. Lovely Oblivion played some shows at fairs, but she never got to participate as a patron.

Aiden pulled into line for a parking spot and they waited as the line inched forward. When they reached the front, he paid for their parking ticket and the attendee directed him where to park.

He pulled into the spot and turned off the engine.

“You ready for this?” he asked her. He drummed his hands on the wheel with excitement and grinned at her.

“Hell yeah!”

“Awesome.” He reached into the backseat and grabbed a hoodie. “Here, put this on.”

He handed her a gray hoodie. The hoodie felt soft, like he wore and washed it often. His warm scent immediately awakened her senses. Walking around in his hoodie would be like walking in his arms all night. She couldn’t say she objected to that.

She tugged the hoodie over her head then adjusted the hat into place.

“How do I look?” she asked.

He stared at her for a moment and mumbled, “Perfect,” at a level she almost didn’t hear. He shook his head quickly and his voice grew louder. “Great. You look great. Let’s go have some fun.” He smiled and climbed out of the car.

That was weird...

Bex climbed out of the car and shut the door behind her.

She pulled the hoodie down, which was about two sizes too big around her, and stuffed her hands in its pockets.

A quick glance at herself in the car window made her admit, she didn’t look like “Bex of Lovely Oblivion” at all. She would blend right in as a college student wearing her guy’s hat and hoodie at the fair.

Maybe Aiden was onto something.

He rounded the car and stepped beside her. He shoved his hands in his pockets and they walked together toward the entrance.

“What do you look forward to riding most?” he asked as they approached the line for the ticket booth.

“Bumper cars. I can’t wait.”

Aiden laughed. “Well, all right then. We’ll definitely hit the bumper cars.”

They waited in line to buy their wristbands for entry. To Bex’s relief, no one so much as glanced her way.

When they reached the front of the line, Aiden paid for their wristbands before Bex could offer.

“This isn’t a date. I can pay my own way,” she protested as they entered through the gate.

“Use your money for food and games. I brought you here — I’ll get you in,” Aiden said.

Bex huffed. “Fine. First item of importance: cotton candy!”

Aiden laughed and followed her to one of the vendor booths for the biggest cotton candy cones they could get — which Bex insisted on buying.

The flashing fair lights, the smell of funnel cakes in the air, and the excitement around them created a magical atmosphere.

“It’s been so long since I attended anything like this,” she said. “Thank you for bringing me.”

“You’re welcome,” Aiden answered with a smile.

They walked around the fairgrounds, enjoying their cotton candy and checking out their options.
