“Tilt-a-whirl?” Aiden asked as they walked past.

Bex’s stomach lurched. “Ugh, no thanks. I feel like I was on that ride last night, and I’d rather not be on it again for a while.”

Aiden laughed. “Yeah, you were out of it last night.”

“Believe me, I know.”

Aiden’s smile faded, and he glanced at his cotton candy. “Erica said you drank that much because of a break-up. Is that true?”

Erica and her big mouth...

“Maybe.”

His eyebrows wrinkled with regret. “I’m sorry you had to go through another break-up. I’m sure the right guy is out there for you.”

“Uhhh... Thanks.”

Friends. He wants to be friends, she reminded herself.

She cleared her throat and asked, “What about you? Is there anyone special I should know about?”

“No. Not anymore.” He gave her an odd look that she couldn’t quite place... Remorse, maybe?

“Really? No one?”

He hesitated, then said, “I don’t date.”

“Oh. Why not?”

He shook his head. “I don’t. I haven’t in a long time.”

She waited for him to explain. When he didn’t, she asked, “Are you going to elaborate?”

He shook his head. “I’d rather not.”

She narrowed her eyes at him, but the sad look on his face made her let it go. She said, “Well, that’s a shame. You always excelled at dating.”

He glanced at her. “I did?”

“Yep.” She popped the ‘p’.

He smiled and gave her a knowing look. “I think my partner helped with that.”

Her heart jumped. They always were good together.

Ignore it. Friends. Focus.

She tried to push her feelings aside and enjoy the evening.

“Whatever you say.” Bex stuck her tongue out at him, then took another bite of cotton candy.

A cute blond ran up to him and gushed, “Aiden, I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Let’s ride the ferris wheel together. Maybe I can do that thing you like with my tongue.” She pressed a kiss against his cheek.

Aiden looked appalled. Jealousy lashed through Bex; she instantly knew that if she wasn’t here, Aiden would’ve taken the offer.

“No, thank you. I’m not alone,” he said.

He reached his hand around Bex’s shoulder and pulled her to his side.
