“I love you, too.”

“Talk to you later.”

“Okay, talk to you later.”

She disconnected the phone and set it on the makeup table again.

She turned to the band. “Blake and I are no longer together. I will not get back together with him. Don’t listen if he says we’re together because it’s not true.”

Giggles went up around the room. Polly said, “We know. He’s been saying you’re together since the start.”

“Seriously? He’s such an asshole. I literally watched someone else suck his dick in public recently.”

“Yeah, let’s not let him back in,” Polly agreed.

Bex sat in the makeup chair and took a deep breath. She needed to calm down and do her makeup for the show.

Chapter 19

Bex

Over a dozen shows later, Bex still hadn’t seen Aiden in person. He faithfully called and texted her every day, but she couldn’t convince him to leave that town. She would have to go to him.

She finished the sound check and headed back to the bus to wait for their show later. When her phone rang, she shook her head with confusion. It was only mid-afternoon. It was too early for Aiden to call.

“Hello?” she answered, confused.

“Bex?” Aiden’s familiar voice asked.

“Yeah, what’s wrong?”

“I...” He cut off and she heard noises in the background.

“Aiden. Talk to me. I know something’s wrong. You never call this early.”

“Can you... can you take any time off work right now? Can you come?”

Oh fuck.

“You don’t have to come if you can’t. I’m used to being alone,” he said quickly. Bex melted.

“Yes. I’ll be there. Tell me what’s going on, though. I’ll make it happen but I need a reason.”

“Mom’s...” a sniffle. “Mom’s not doing well. It’s going to happen soon. I need you. Can you come?” He openly sobbed and Bex’s heart broke for him.

“Hang in there. I’ll be there as soon as I can. I promise. A few hours, tops. I’ll be there. Are you okay?”

“I’m okay. Come. Please. I can’t...” Another sniffle. “I can’t do this alone. I’m sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry about. I’ll be there. Hang on, okay? I’ll see you soon. Are you at the nursing home?”

“Yes. Okay. I’m sorry. I love you.”

“I love you, too. I’ll be there soon. I promise. You can count on me.”

Reluctantly, she disconnected the phone. Aiden could not be alone if Julie died. She had to do something.

“Greg!” she yelled the tour manager’s name into the empty parking lot.
