Asshole.

She couldn’t believe it. She’d been ready to move in with him.

Bex drank some of the orange juice that sat on the table and contemplated adding vodka to it when her phone rang.

Her mom’s red hair flashed across Bex’s phone screen.

Despite her best judgment, she answered. “Hello?”

“Elizabeth! Hey baby,” her mom spoke, calling her by her full name. “I heard you have to go back out for fall tour soon. Do you think now would be a good time to come visit for a few weeks? We never see you anymore.”

The guilt trip on top of everything else was too much. “Sure. I’ll fly down next week and catch up with you before I have to head out on tour again. My high school reunion happens then too.”

“Excellent!” Her mom clapped. “Send me your info and I’ll pick you up at the airport. I’m so excited.”

“Okay, thanks. Be there soon. Love you.”

“Love you, too! See you soon.”

Bex disconnected the call and rolled her neck. All this stress was going to kill her.

She sent out a FYI text to the band. Blake = history. No access to anything.

The responses were a bunch of thumbs up. No one was surprised?

Bex wandered to her kitchen and grabbed a tub of chocolate ice cream, a spoon, and a bottle of Jack. Arms full, she wobbled back to her bedroom and flung herself on the bed.

Since she had nowhere to be, she would load up on chocolate and Jack then sleep the day away. No one would care. She was supposed to meet Blake later but that was a no-go now.

She turned on the TV but nothing interesting played. She took a swig of Jack.

Her mind randomly wandered, but soon she drifted asleep.

The smell of bacon and eggs filled the air. Aiden’s mom’s, Julie’s, laughter followed it.

Julie didn’t care when Bex stayed over, so she did more often than not. Bex felt more at home in Julie’s kitchen than anywhere.

Bex and Aiden rushed down from Aiden’s room, ready for breakfast.

Julie laughed as they lined up at the kitchen table, alert and ready for the day.

Julie stumbled as she headed toward the stove, laughing it off as clumsiness. She loaded their plates with scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast, then deposited them at the table in front of the two people she considered to be her kids.

Aiden and Bex chowed down, washing everything down with orange juice. Julie wished them good days at school and ushered them out the door when they finished.

Those were the best days of Bex’s life and she’d do anything to have them back.

Bex sat on her bed and sobbed.

“But Aiden...”

“No, Bex. I love you. I will always love you. But we need to start fresh. No regrets, okay?”

Aiden’s face looked like he held back tears of his own.
