“Come in.”

I open the door, stepping inside. “Hey.”

“Hey.” He smiles. He’s leaned back in his chair, a second button undone on his Oxford. He looks like he’s been running his hands through his hair. “Do you need something?”

“No, I just wanted to see what you were up to.”

“Working.” He gestures toward his desk. “Same old.”

“I noticed on the TV in my room that you have access to movies that haven’t even been released yet.”

“Yeah.” He laughs. “A friend runs the studio.”

“The entire movie studio?” My eyes bulge.

“Yes,” he says so casually, as if we all have such a friend.

“Anyway, I wanted to see if you wanted to have a movie night. I could make some popcorn and we could watch one of those new movies.” I sit down in one of the chairs across from him.

He gives a sympathetic smile and I already know what he’s going to say before he even says it.

“I can’t tonight. I have a deal that needs my full attention, I’m afraid.”

“Okay.” I jump up from the chair. “Have fun with work.” I give him a playful smile as I exit his office, hiding the disappointment that is burning in my chest.

I walk slowly back upstairs to my room, jumping into bed and selecting a movie for myself. Within twenty minutes, I’m already nodding off, falling asleep alone, watching TV just like I do at my apartment.

Chapter 8

Atlas

“That event I need you to attend with me is tomorrow so you will need to get a dress for it. I’ll call Neiman Marcus or Saks, whichever you prefer, and have them set you up with a knowledgeable sales associate.”

I don’t lift my gaze from my iPad as I scroll the news. Stella pulls out a chair at the table and sits down with her coffee.

“Tomorrow? I work today, though.”

“I know. Go after.”

“I guess it’s good I didn’t have other plans,” she mutters half into her cup as she lifts it to her mouth.

“Are you always going to be this difficult?” I drop the iPad on the table with a thud, making her jump. I watch as her eyes narrow and I know she’s thinking through some snarky comment about how it’s too short of notice but I’m not in the mood today. Last night, when she walked into my office in her tiny silk shorts and matching top that clearly showcased her lack of a bra, I wanted to pull her across my desk and bite her nipples through her shirt. I wanted to hear her cry out in pain before soothing them with my tongue. My cock pulses against my thigh in my lap, letting me know that I’m going to have to start jerking off daily if I’m going to keep my hands off her.

Instead of a snarky comment, she just shrugs, taking a long sip of her coffee. “Yeah, probably.”

I try to hide the twitch of my lip but I know she saw it. She bites her own lip.

She knows I like when she’s difficult. She saw it that night in her apartment too, the way I wanted to devour her when she defied me.

“I’ll text you with the name of the woman to go to at Neiman Marcus and at what time you need to be ready for Mac to pick you up and take you there.”

“I can do it myself. Mac doesn’t need to take me; I’ll take the subway.”

“Stella.” I sigh, placing my napkin on the table. “You don’t take the subway anymore. You’re about to be my wife so please, just do what I say. I told you, it’s for your own safety.”

“Okay, fine. I guess I wasn’t thinking about it that way.”

“Please start thinking about your safety. You have to do your part with this deal as well. If you’re going to be in this world with me, you need to be aware and you need to read the contract.”
