“It’s just that…” I grab my clutch nervously. “You remember a few months back when I mentioned how I wasn’t on birth control?” I undo the clasp, reaching inside to pull out a positive pregnancy test. “I somehow let it slip a lot longer than I should have.”

He stares at the pregnancy test, slowly lifting his eyes to mine. “I was wrong,” he says, my breath hitching in my chest. “This is the best birthday present I could ever get.” His shock finally turns into laughter as we both hold each other, crying tears of joy and probably fear as we launch into every little idea we have for a nursery or name or how we’ll spend our mornings on the weekends with a baby and a toddler and what it will be like to watch them grow into a teenager, then an adult.

Before we’ve made it home, we’ve both agreed we’ll set up an appointment with the doctor tomorrow because Atlas doesn’t believe the pregnancy test in his hand, let alone the four or five others I told him I took along with that one.

We crawl into bed, both of us exhausted but too excited to sleep. We talk for hours about life, about our first thoughts of each other, about our hopes for each other and our growing family.

“You know, this is going to sound incredibly cliché but”—he looks over at me—“you said you didn’t need saving and I don’t think you did. I think I did. I just didn’t realize it.”

“I know, I remember telling you that. Looks like I’m the knight in shining armor after all,” I say, making him smile.

“I guess so, but what does that make me? A damsel in distress?”

“No.” I climb atop him, pulling his hands above his head as I lean forward. I trail my lips over his warm skin, the feeling of his body coming alive beneath me. “I think deep down inside, I knew who you really were that day you took me home.”

“Yeah? And who am I, darling?” His eyes darken as he looks back up at me and somehow, I’m positive he already knows what I’m going to say.

“You’re the devil in disguise.”
