I breathe a sigh of relief, tuning everything else out. Good…that means they don’t have her.

So she’s with Vance.

And as much as I don’t like the way Vance looks at her, she’s safe there.

“She’s out of your reach, and that’s what matters,” I say.

Lianna pulls away, and I get a little more relief…but then her fingers are dancing over the syringes, each one catching a glimmer of some sickly light as she pulls them out one by one.

She doesn’t jab any into my flesh, but her message is clear as day: they’re ready to play doctor.

“Alright, Finch,” Caius says, voice steady as the hum of an electric current, “in that case, let’s talk about the Stargazer. Aisling, right? What does Vance want with her?”

The mention of her name—my Aisling—sparks something primal inside me. My muscles tense, and a growl rumbles in my chest. I jerk against the ropes, feeling the burn against my skin. “Doesn’t fucking matter to you,” I growl. “She’s not yours anymore.”

“Easy, Gunnar.” Caius sits back, arms folded across his chest like he owns the place. His gaze never leaves mine, like he’s daring me to lie. “I just want to know how much she knows about Terra Vitae…and if you don’t tell me, then we have ways of making you talk.”

I glance at Lianna; her eyes are locked on mine, too intense, too much. She’s holding up a vial now, drawing some bright blue poison into it. I struggle again, dread building up inside me as she comes closer.

“I don’t even know what the hell you’re talking about,” I say. “I don’t know what Terra Vitae is, I don’t know anything about what Vance is planning. If it was up to me…hell, I would have gotten my omega out of here as soon as she was safe from you—“

I’m moving, practically flailing, desperate to get out now that Lianna is close with that sharp silver needle. But the chair is bolted to the floor, the ropes are tight, I’m already weak.

“Stop struggling or we’ll have to sedate you,” Caius says. “And my wife…she likes to play.”

She’s insane, fuck, fuck! Lianna circles behind me, and her touch is icy cold as she brushes my neck. I jerk away, then back because there’s nowhere to go—

—the needle pierces my skin, cold blooming in my veins as the poison moves through.

And whatever she pushes into my system…it floods me with a fuzzy, unwelcome calm.

“Better?” she whispers, her breath hot against my ear.

“Get off me,” I hiss, but my body betrays me, going slack in the chair.

Lianna straddles my lap, her dress a black waterfall spilling over my thighs. Her fingers trace my jawline, skimming down to tilt my chin up. “Can I keep him, Caius? He’d make such a lovely addition to New Eden.”

“Lianna,” Caius warns, but there’s amusement in his tone. I have no idea what they’re talking about, I just want to go home.

I just want to be with my mate.

“Please?” she purrs, pressing closer.

Darkness licks at the edges of my vision, drawing in tight. I fight it, try to stay conscious, but it’s like swimming through tar. All I can do is watch helplessly as Lianna’s face blurs and fades…

…and then everything slips away.

Chapter twenty-one

Oberon

Ilike Gunnar.

We’re not as close as he and Aisling—of course—and we hardly know each other. We’ve always been bound together by one common factor, and that’s Aisling.

And right now, she wants to put herself in danger for him…and I can’t allow that.

I don’t think Gunnar would either.
