“Oh yeah?”

“Mmm hmm,” she murmured, rolling onto her stomach propping her chin on her hand so she could take in the glory of his naked body over again. “You look like a Greek god, one of those statues you see in museums.” She waited for him to smile, let it run straight to his ego. “Of course, they have all that muscle and masculine prowess then …” She glanced down and saw his head dip in response as he followed her gaze. “Tiny little penises.”

His head snapped up. “What?”

“It’s a good thing you don’t have that problem,” she said sweetly.

“That’s the meanest way a woman has ever told me I have a big dick.”

She shrugged. “You like it when I’m mean.”

He didn’t deny it, but he did give her backside a small slap as he climbed back into bed with her. “I should have known better than to tell you that.”

“Definitely.” She’d lost her desire to tease him now that he was back within her reach and she pulled him close before he could respond, parting her lips to invite him in as he settled again between her thighs.

Without words or clothes to distract them, the heat between them built quickly and before long she was writhing beneath him, wet and aching. “Ethan,” she gasped, hanging on to the last little thread of her rational thought. “We have to?—”

“Got it.” He leaned over, rummaging around in a drawer beside her head and coming back with a condom in his hand.

“Hurry,” she panted, and she expected him to tease her for that, but he was focused, as eager and determined as she was. It took only moments for him to accomplish his task, but it seemed much longer to Eloise as she waited, body tense and desperate.

One smooth push was enough to open her for him and she arched into it, satisfied noises pouring unchecked from her throat and her eyes locked on his.

He never looked away from her unless it was to kiss her again, and she found herself unsettled by the intensity of his gaze even as her body responded to his more quickly and overwhelmingly than she’d ever dreamed possible.

It had been difficult, almost impossible, for her to orgasm with anyone else in the past. With Ethan, it came more easily. The usual tension her body held was absent and she leaned into the sensations she was experiencing, chasing the orgasm as it built instead of wondering what he’d think of her. She let it take control and it crashed over her within minutes, shocking them both.

He followed her over the edge soon after, hiking her leg over his hip to drive deep and letting out a pleased grunt that made her smile into his shoulder. When he rolled onto his side, he tugged her with him, holding her close in the circle of his arms until he slipped out of her and headed for the bathroom to dispose of the condom.

She followed him, waiting beside the door until he came out and letting him kiss her again as he passed. It didn’t take her long to clean up but by the time she returned to bed he was spread out across the covers, dozing with arms flung wide and just enough room for her to climb back in beside him. Surely, if he wanted her to leave, he would have said so before he fell asleep.

Eloise watched his face as he slept, the sun lighting the line of his nose and shadowing the dimples of his cheeks. She was happy and satisfied and it seemed that he was, too, but something at the back of her mind made her uneasy.

He’d been so wonderful with her, soft and understanding when she needed it and unafraid to give more intimacy in one afternoon than she’d ever experienced before, and a wave of uncomfortable guilt washed over her. She’d taken Sarah’s words to heart and resolved to keep things light and casual, but had she forgotten to make sure Ethan knew that?

Thirteen

“Winston!” Eloise called the dog’s name and followed up with a series of shameless kissy noises as Ethan’s pup opened one eye and then returned to his nap. He was clearly unimpressed with the little collar she’d found, complete with a small plaid bow tie. Ethan had insisted the thing was ridiculous, but with a name like Winston, how could he not be dressed as a gentleman?

If Ethan didn’t want Winston to wear it, then he shouldn’t have left her alone with him while he ran to the store. After several weeks of being at her house more often than he was at his own, he knew what he was in for when he left the two of them together.

She wasn’t sure what she was going to do about her growing feelings for him, but when he playfully accused her of liking Winston more than she did him … Well, maybe it wasn’t entirely true, but surely it was a near thing.

After a lifetime of wanting a pet of her own, Winston’s little paws and sweet brown eyes had wormed right into her heart. Ethan reminded her often that he was going to be a big dog someday and she should stop babying him, but Eloise was convinced he would always be the perfect size for cuddling, no matter how fast he was growing.

Her attachment to the pup had become a running joke at the office ever since Sarah had discovered the background picture on her phone was one she’d snapped of Winston sleeping on her living room rug.

“Wait,” Sarah had asked, snatching Eloise’s phone and shaking it to get everyone’s attention. “You’re buying me dessert for a whole month because you’re sleeping with Ethan and your new background picture is of his dog?”

“What’s it supposed to be?” Eloise had made a grab for her phone, but Sarah’s reflexes had always been quicker than hers and she’d dodged it easily.

“Ethan? The two of you together? Something couple-ish? Not his dog?”

Eloise sniffed, settling back in her seat with her arms crossed and ignoring the others as they laughed at her pouting expression. “I don’t think we’re at that place yet. Maybe not ever. We’re just having fun, remember?”

“Uh huh,” Sarah said with a wink. “Lots of fun.”

“You were the ones who said I’d be able to keep it light and casual.”
