Page 40 of Dangerously In Love

I sit up, reach over, and grab my phone. I’m unable to mask the face I pull.

“What’s wrong?” Brandon says, sitting up to lean his head in one hand, the other smoothing his fingers over my thigh.

“It’s Reid,” I say, avoiding his gaze. I have nothing to hide, but somehow saying Reid’s name in the intimate space of my room while Brandon and I are together feels wrong.

Brandon’s brows knit. “What does he want?”

The phone stops ringing in my hand. I’ve missed several texts and phone calls since last night.

I start scrolling through some of the messages, but they’re mostly repetitive apologies I read out to Brandon.

SO SORRY AVE

I’M SUCH AN ASSHOLE!!!!!

PLEASE

PICK

UP

SORRY

“Is that all that he said?” Brandon moves off of me. “I’m going to get a towel,” he says, moving to my attached bathroom.

I scroll some more and gasp at the turn the messages take. Brandon must not hear my intake of breath with the faucet running.

First the messages are apologetic, then threatening.

Who do you think you are

Fucking Bitch!!!

WHAT I EVER SEE IN YOU ANYWAY

I’m a Buford! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE LOSTTTTT

TELL UR BF TO WATCH HIS FUCKING BACK

Brandon sits down and takes the phone out of my hand. “What are you doing?”

“I’m going to take screenshots and send the attachments to TSS. I have a folder on everything I’ve collected so far. I’m thinking Reid might be our stalker.”

Reid’s words from the night before come back to me.After the last time you tossed me out of your apartment, I was tempted to hunt you down and beg for another chance.

“He did make reference to the stalking situation last night. Basically, to the effect that he sympathized with the stalker and would do the same.”

Brandon makes a fist and pushes down on the mattress, his veined forearm flexing. “Dammit, Ava, why didn’t you mention that last night?”

I place my hands on both sides of his face, trying to give my most apologetic look and hoping it works on him.

“Last night after we made it back to the car, I wasn’t thinking about Reid or anything he’d said to me last night,” I say, kissing the corner of his mouth.

“That’s not going to distract me,” Brandon says, a small smile reappearing on his face. He maneuvers my legs apart and begins cleaning up the remnants of our sex off of me. “Reid is number one on my list now. If I catch him anywhere near you, I’m hauling him into jail myself.”

“Fine. I’m not sure if it’s him, but we can’t be too careful,” I say as a shudder moves through my body.

If Reid is the stalker, I was right up on him most of last night. Inviting me out could have been one big ruse to bring me to him instead of him constantly having to come after me.
