Page 42 of Dangerously In Love

“Don’t apologize,” Ava says, moving close so that our bodies are perfectly lined up, chest to chest. Her big brown eyes look up into mine. “There’s no one I feel safer with.”

Protection is what I do and what I’ve always done for the last decade. Yet, hearing Ava sayThere’s no one I feel safer withchips away at the armor I’ve built up.

I lean down and meet her upturned lips with my own.Kissing Ava still feels wrong, but it’s not something I plan on stopping anytime soon. At least, as long as Asher is none the wiser.

“I’m going to fix this. The last thing I want is for you to feel intimidated in your own home.”

Ava furrows a brow at my words, still embraced in my arms. “What are you going to do?”

“Something I should have done much earlier. Since this building of yours will not beef up security footage, I’ll just have to do it myself.”

“I don’t want cameras in my apartment, Bran.”

I shake my head at Ava’s words. “Nothing on the inside, but I’m insisting outside and into the hallway at least. In fact, I’ll request that Maxwell accompany you to your publisher while I handle this.”

Ava parted her lips, beginning to say more, but she must have decided against it because she stepped away from me. The absence of her warm body leaves mine feeling bereft. The power this young woman has over me already is terrifying.

I reach for her hand with my free one. In my opposite hand, I’ve already brought up several companies I trust to do the camera installation.

“Ava, not to worry about any of this. Just think of it as extra precaution.”

“Okay, I trust you,” she says, squeezing my hand back with her softer, small one. Ava’s attention makes me feel like I can take on the world.

Am I becoming sentimental?

“Give Maxwell a few moments to get here. In the meanwhile, I can set up the camera installation,” I say.

“I have a better idea,” Ava says, tugging my hand and bringing our bodies flush again. She wraps her slim arms around my neck, urging me down to kiss her.

Kissing her shouldn’t affect me quite like this. By now, the novelty usually wears off for me. At least in the past it has. Every time Ava and I join, something detonates in my body, and I’m on fire. Desperation to possess her body with my own takes over.

My hands grasp her hips and I urge her to wrap her legs around my waist. I move us back towards her sofa and lay Ava down.

I pause, peering down at her face. Her swollen lips and slightly reddish chin from my beard hardens me. Something about Ava looking utterly ravished and knowing I put the look on her primes me to fuck her again.

“What?” Ava questions. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Like I wanted to fuck her, possess her.

Like I wanted to bury myself so deep inside Ava that no other man could dare trespass on what I considered my woman. Forever.

Looking down into Ava’s eyes as she tries to assess my own, I realize it must be the look of love she sees in my eyes. I’ve loved Ava Wells her entire life. I remembered the day Violet went into labor. Along with her father and brother, I was one of the first men to ever hold Ava.

Could I hope to be the last man to hold her?

“If I’m looking like I want to make you come right now, it’s because I do,” I say instead. Ava doesn’t need to know where my thoughts were actually heading.

A shiver runs through her body, and the balls of her feet press into my lower back.

“Well, then, carry on,” she says, barely containing a smirk.

I begin pushing her skirt upwards and remember Maxwell is due to arrive any moment. “No time for that,” I say.

Ava pokes out her bottom lip, making her appear even younger than her twenty-six years. “Why would you tease me?”

Moving my hands up farther under the skirt, skimming the pads of my fingers along her soft thighs, I contact the smooth material of her panties. “I’ll make it up to you. I am quick with my hands.”

I don’t wait for a reply and instead slip a digit inside her warm, damp pussy.
