The intruder manages to slash a gash into Brandon’s forearm before being pulled to the ground, where they proceed to roll around for leverage.

They roll until Brandon’s on top of the intruder and punches him hard, seeming to knock the person out. Their head lolls back at an unnatural angle and the fight ceases.

“Ava, hurry and get me something to tie him up.”

I spring into action, looking around the room for something to assist Brandon. I spot the chair where some of his ties are discarded and grab them.

I hand one to Brandon and use the other to bind the man’s feet.

After securing the ties around the intruder’s feet, my hands are shaking even harder. I make my way to the switch and turn on the overhead bedroom light. Brandon straddles the intruder, not removing his eyes from them, making sure they don’t try to get up again.

Brandon pushes back the hood that fell over most of their face, and I gasp at the sight of Reid’s bloody and probably broken nose.

“Oh my God,” I say, covering my mouth with both hands.

Brandon just shakes his head. “I should have known. He’s probably been going crazy ever since you blocked him.”

A pounding at my front door causes me to jump. “Police, open up.”

“Go,” Brandon says, motioning to where the door is. “I’ve got him. He’s not going anywhere.”

I pad quickly to the front door, my feet cold on the hardwood, but the temperature feels good on my overheated body. Thankfully, my nakedness is covered by Brandon’s shirt that reaches midthigh.

When I open the door, the first person I see is Lt. Cortes along with two officers. “Everything okay here?” she asks.

I open the door wider and shake my head. “No, my ex broke in.”

She nods and hooks a thumb to the officers behind her. “Your security company dispatched a call to us. When I realized it was your address, I came along with them. Where is he?”

“In the bedroom,” I say, leading the officers along.

When the four of us arrive back in the bedroom, Reid begins stirring, even with his hands and feet bound and Brandon not allowing him to sit up.

“We’ve got this,” I hear the male officer say, and he and the female officer begin sitting Reid up and replacing the ties with real handcuffs.

Brandon joins Lieutenant Cortes and I in the bedroom doorway. We begin explaining to Cortes what happened and have to move out of the doorway to allow the other officers to move past. Each has their arm around one of Reid’s and they lead him out the front door.

Reid can barely keep his head up. He was probably high when he arrived, and Brandon’s knockout threw him off balance.

“So, what happens next?” I ask.

“Well, Reid will be charged with breaking and entering, along with harassment. I assume you’ll want a restraining order.” She pauses.

I nod my head vigorously. “As soon as you can do it,” I say, a shudder passing through me at the thought of Reid being behind all the attacks and weird messages. I just didn’t suspect him of going this far, but you never really knew what a person was capable of.

“Okay, I’ll get started on that tonight. One of you give me a call in the morning,” she says.

“We will,” Brandon says, putting an arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer to his side. A place I want to stay in forever.

“You folks got really lucky tonight,” she says, making her way to the front door. “I’m glad this is all over for you now, Ms. Wells.”

“Me too,” I say, wrapping an arm around Brandon’s strong middle. My anchor in the storm.

The following morning, I’m running on very little sleep my phone constantly pings notifications from several local gossip blogs as well as tags on social media after they get wind of Reid’s arrest.
