Once I have her strapped into the backseat, I help Sela load the cardboard boxes, filled with their colorful party favors, into the trunk.
“Thanks for taking these to the inn for us,” she says as I shut the liftgate.
“It’s no trouble at all,” I say.
“Keller knows you’re coming, and he’ll help you carry them into the atrium. You can set them on the table by the stage.”
“Got it,” I say.
“Okay, well, I’ll let you go. Thank you again.”
I catch her hand as she spins to go.
“Wait, Sela.”
She turns back to me, and her big, beautiful eyes come to me.
I know I need to say something after the night we spent together, but I can’t find the right words.
“How are you getting home?” I ask instead.
“Mom and Dad are going to drop me off,” she says.
“I can give you a ride. I mean, if you want, so they don’t have to go out of their way.”
She looks over her shoulder and back to me. “Okay. I’ll tell Dad and grab my bag. I’ll be right back.”
I release her hand and watch as she hurries back inside.
When she reemerges, she is wrapped in her red coat, and her purse is in her hand.
I open the passenger door and shut it quietly so as not to wake Cobie. Then, I drive her into town.
Pulling the SUV up to the flower shop, I leave it running while I walk her the five steps to the door. I take her keys from her and unlock the dead bolt.
“Thank you,” she says as I hand them back.
I glance at the SUV to make sure Cobie is still sleeping, and then I take Sela’s face into my hands.
“I shouldn’t have taken off like I did this morning. I—shit, I didn’t know what to say. I really enjoyed our night, and I should have woken you to say good-bye,” I confess.
Her hand comes up and clasps my wrist. “It’s okay.”
Her eyes glisten, and I feel like an asshole.
“No, it isn’t. I’m so sorry.”
I press my forehead to hers.
“You’re forgiven,” she murmurs.
I lift her face and bring her lips to mine. I kiss her softly.
“Good night, Sela.”
“Sweet dreams,” she whispers.
I move aside and hold the door open for her.
