She was never wrong—ever.

I shoot him back a text.

Me:

I’ll be in touch on Monday after I’ve discussed this with Whitley. Tuesday if I decide to get my lawyers involved.

His reply is immediate.

Unknown:

I do not think that is necessary.

Blood boiling, I start to send a reply when I hear a horn blast behind me.

Pulling out an AirPod, I look back, and only then do I realize I’m no longer on the side of the road. I’m almost in the middle of the right lane. The person who blew the horn? Whitley, and she’s wearing a seriously sexy messy bun and shades that are hiding her whole face.

“What are you doing?” she yells—yes, yells—at me.

“Yeah, what are you doing?” Nora’s little voice asks, making me smile.

I step to the passenger side of her vehicle and open the door. “Looking for a ride.”

“I gotta go to school. Gonna be late. Pitter-patter, Pope.”

“Pitter what?” I ask, setting my ass in the seat without invitation.

“Pitter-patter, let’s get at ’er. Means we’re runnin’ late. Buckle up, buttercup. We gots to go.” She starts laughing, and Whit just shakes her head as she puts the vehicle in drive.

I turn and smile at the little slugger. “You’re full of it this morning.”

“Full of what?” she asks.

“Excitement for school and learning,” Whit says. “Hold on to that while we swing back around and take Pope?—”

“Can’t be late. I’ll ride along.”

“Yay!” Nora claps.

“Yay,” I say and clap as well, gaining me a side-eye from Whitley.

Still clapping, Nora asks, “Are we playing baseball again tonight? Mommy doesn’t have to work, and she can play too.”

“You ever been to a batting cage?” I ask, fully immersing myself in Nora’s excitement and my proximity to Whit and the plethora of opportunities I seem to be having this morning.

“No!” She grins as her eyes grow bigger. “Can they fly in there?”

I chuckle because she thinks I’m talking about the mammal. “Yeah, they sure can.”

“I wanna go! Can we go, Mommy? Can we?”

“Can we, Mommy?” I ask.

“I need to look over my schedule and?—”

“Love for you both to go, but if you can’t make it, Whit, I think Nora and I could manage.”

She flips on her blinker to pull into the school. “I will look at my schedule.”
