The dress is honestly something that would catch my eye, and I might have picked it out for myself, if I ever had an occasion to wear a dress somewhere other than church. It has a halter-style top and sheer long sleeves with flouncy cuffs. It’s more fitted than I’m used to, and it reveals some skin, as there’s a slit on each side of the waist. The bodice top attaches to the skater-style skirt that hits just above the knees. The entire dress is covered in the same sheer material as the sleeves, which classes it up in a way.

“I expelled all of the poison I put in my system last night, and I will not be doing that again for a very, very long time.” Chloe, who is being a trooper today, smiles.

“You’ve got fifteen minutes in there,” Marks calls to us from the living room area of the suite.

“I still wish one of them were with him.”

Danny pokes his head in the room. “We both offered. He wanted us with you.”

Bianca’s phone, which I’m still using, makes a sound, alerting me of a call, and I know it’s Nora.

“Okay, act normal and just, you know, be normal.”

I accept the FaceTime request and smile when I see her sweet little face.

“Hi, Mommy.” Before I have a chance to say hello, she leans in. “You look so pretty. Are you, Miss Gwen, and Miss Chloe goin’ on a girls’ day?”

“No, actually, I’m going on a date.”

Her nose crinkles up. “Not with Mr. Seward, right? You said you weren’t gonna marry him anymore.”

“Nope, not with him.”

She smiles. “Is it with our best friend, John Paul?”

“Would that be okay with you?”

“Is he gonna be your new boyfriend?”

“I think so. How do you feel about that?”

She laughs a deep, excited little laugh. “I would feel really good, ’specially if you married him instead of Mr. Seward. He’s way more fun, and he loves me, Mommy.”

“He told me he loves you, and I was like, ‘Of course you do. She’s the most lovable little girl in the world.’”

“Yeah.” She shrugs, trying not to show just how excited that makes her. “I am lovable.”

“I miss you and can’t wait to see you tomorrow.”

“We’re leaving the water slide place and going right to church. Will you be at church, Mommy?”

“I might not be, but I’ll be there to tuck you in and read you books.”

She frowns. “You gotta work?”

I hate lying to her, but I also didn’t want her to feel left out. When it comes to Pope, that girl wants to be right in the middle of it all. He makes her feel special, and I know how good that feels. And this is why I didn’t tell her I’m not in Walton.

“Maybe.”

“Okay, Mommy. I love you. Have fun with John Paul. Tell him I love him.”

“I will, but you can tell him that tomorrow too.”

“Can we play baseball?”

“Maybe.”

“Awesome. Bye, Mommy.”
