“Walk faster!” Jake’s voice is followed by a bout of mocking laughter.

Glancing over my shoulder, I find him leaning against the doorframe and grinning like he’s won an easy game. He makes a shooing motion like I’m a stray cat or a dog he’s trying to get rid of.

Rage, like I’ve never felt before, boils through me. How dare he do this to me again?

Jake never regrated sending me to the Black Widow. He never saw me as anything but a commodity that could bring him power. How could I ever fall for a monster like him?

Swallowing my hatred like bitter poison, I look away.

I hurry down the corridor just to get away from him. Reaching the staircase, I halt in my steps.

Sounds of soft music and the buzz of people’s conversation float up to me. Dad’s party is still going strong. He must be busy looking after his guests, oblivious to the unwanted visitor that has stepped inside his home.

Jake has been to the house plenty of times. He knows the place like the back of his hand. That’s the reason he was able to slip in without being noticed by Dad or me.

Once I walk out of the gates, he’ll quietly slip away. No one would ever know why I chose to leave the party without telling anyone.

As always, Jake has cleverly made sure no one can link him to my disappearance.

Gripping the hardwood railing, I step down the stairs.

Seth, Oliver, and Simon’s faces rise in my mind. They’ll be so confused when they realize I’ve disappeared.

My heart shatters when I think of my mates and what they’ll go through when they can’t find me. I hate hurting them this way but it’s the only way to protect them. Even though they’ve accepted me for who I am, they can never erase away the stains of my past.

Jake is a mastermind who can twist the truth to make me look like a whore who served strange men. With that one video, he can destroy the reputation of both my mates and my father.

Even though I’m trying to protect the people I love, I’m still going to end up hurting them. Anger and hurt clash inside me, making me clutch my chest.

I was a fool to think I could escape the snares of the Black Widow. Their soldiers might be dead but the ones who commanded them are still standing strong. They’ll never allow me and the other captive omegas to be free.

Within a matter of seconds, I’m standing at the base of the staircase.

The noise from the party is louder but this section of the house is still deserted. No one has any idea about the battle I’m fighting.

You made up your mind back there, I tell myself, forcing my feet to keep moving. You’re not going to allow Jake and his associates to humiliate your dad and your mates.

Balling my hands into fists, I walk down the corridor that leads to the kitchen. Not a single guest is around to notice me wandering in these deserted hallways.

Reaching the kitchen, I push open the door and walk inside.

The place is just as we left it.

I glance at the half-eaten sandwiches still lying on the counters. It’s barely been an hour since I was here with Simon and Oliver. Our combined scents still linger in the air, reminding me of the hot sex we had here.

An ache goes through me.

I can’t believe I have to give up on them to protect them. Life shouldn’t be this unfair to me.

Tears run down my cheeks as a sob threatens to escape my trembling lips. I don’t want to cry. I don’t want to be weak and let Jake win again.

My gaze falls on the bottle of scotch. There’s still some left in it, so I move toward it and grab it.

Taking a deep breath, I gulp down the scotch, feeling the cool liquid burn down my throat. Coughing and sputtering, I slap the bottle down on the table and wait for it to warm my insides.
