My brothers’ expressions are as tense as mine. We have no idea what’s happening but we’re sure Rory’s in danger.

“Let’s go,” I say in a commanding tone and stride out of the room.

My brothers keep pace with me as I lead them downstairs.

The party’s not as loud as it was before. Most of the guests look drunk and relaxed. They’re either enjoying quiet conversations or saying their goodbyes.

“Seth, hold up!” Mr. Bailley’s voice stops me in my tracks.

Turning around, I face him. “Hello, Mr. Mayor,” I say, forcing my expression to look relaxed and neutral.

“Did you find out where Rory is?” he asks, looking deeply disturbed and anxious.

“Yeah, she’s fine.”

“Oh? Did you manage to get a hold of her?” he asks hopefully.

“We recognized one of the women from the camera footage. She’s one of Rory’s old friends. I think they went out together to see one of their pals at home,” Oliver replies, forcing a smile on his face.

“We’ve been hearing her talk to them over the past couple of days,” Simon adds to the lie. “I’m sure she went to their house.”

“We’re about to go and pick her up now,” I say.

Relief floods his face. “Are you serious? She’s okay, then?”

I nod. “We’ll come and see you another time, Philip.”

“The party was awesome,” Oliver and Simon chime together. “Thanks for inviting us.”

Their forced smiles look more like grimaces but Mr. Bailley buys our ruse. He gives us a little wave as a group of elderly men gather around him.

“Let’s get out of here,” Oliver mutters, hurrying his pace. “I can’t take another second of this suspense.”

“Thank fuck the senator doesn’t live too far away,” Simon says, looking anxious.

I silently agree with him. We’ll reach the senator’s house within fifteen minutes if the roads are clear.

Let our mate be safe, I silently pray and rush out with my brothers.

My heart pounds painfully as my bare feet pad down the stairs. With every step, I glance back furtively, making sure Vaughn isn’t following me.

I silently make my way down a deserted corridor, hoping I can find my way back to the entrance hall. The only exit I know is through the main front doors, so I desperately pray no one would be around to see me escape.

A part of me wonders if I’ve made a mistake. What would happen if Vaughn releases that horrible video clip?

I halt in my steps. What the fuck am I doing?

Didn’t I decide to go through this hell to protect my dad and my mates? Why did I fight against Vaughn? Why am I so desperate to escape when I made up my mind to endure his torture?

A stuttered breath escapes me as I lean against the wall. My survival instincts clash against my logical reasoning, rendering me incapable of making a decision.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” a strange female voice sounds from behind me.

Whirling around, I come face to face with one of the women who followed me here. She’s no longer wearing a fancy gown. Dressed in a black camo outfit and tall boots, she reminds me of my captors down in those underground bunkers.
