“Answer me, omega!” she snaps, striding toward me.

Fear flows through my veins like ice water. Panic grips me by the throat, eradicating all rational thought from my head.

Turning away from her, I run down the hallway.

“Stop!” the woman shouts.

Without a backward look, I sprint. My panicked mind keeps me blinded to everything else around me. Heavy gasps escape me as I try to outrun the beta giving me chase.

Rounding a corner, I find myself in the entrance hall of the mansion.

“Stop her!” The woman behind me screams. “Don’t let her get away!”

To my dismay, her companion is alerted.

The second woman was in the middle of putting down dishes of food on a coffee table. A look of confusion and surprise flits through her face but she’s quick enough to spot me and come for me.

Lunging forward, she grabs my arm.

“Let go of me!” I shout, fighting against her.

Her gaze roves all over me, taking in my tattered dress and messed-up hair.

“What’re you up to, bitch?” she asks, digging her nails into my upper arm. “Does the master know you’re here?”

“Don’t let her get away,” says the woman who’d been chasing me. Walking into the room, she pinches my chin and forces me to meet her stare. “Who gave you the permission to walk around the house?” she asks.

I stay silent, hoping they won’t find out what I did to their master.

The woman before me grabs a handful of my hair and tugs hard. “Answer me!”

“Don’t rough her up just yet,” her companion says while she’s still holding onto me. “Find Master Vaughn and ask him what’s going on. We don’t want him getting mad at us for bruising his omega. Just make sure she doesn’t run again.”

“She’s not going anywhere,” my captor says as she twists my arm behind me. “I’ll keep an eye on her.”

I start struggling against her the moment her friend leaves. It’s the only chance I’ll get to escape this place.

Something hard pokes against my back. “Don’t think you’ll have it easy just because she’s gone,” my captor whispers in my ear. “I’ll shoot you if you try to resist me.”

“Won’t your master be angry if you kill me?”

“He’ll be angrier if I let you leave.”

“Shoot me, then,” I say, struggling to throw her off. My fighting instincts flare up, making me bite her hand.

The beta woman’s hold on me loosens. Taking advantage, I throw her off me.

I get to run two steps before she’s on me again.

“Get back here!” she seethes, pulling me back by my hair.

“Don’t let her escape!” the beta soldier who’d gone upstairs to check on Vaughn runs back into the room. “She’s hurt Master Vaughn.”

A look of dismay comes over my captor. “What’re you talking about, Crowley?”

“Master is unconscious and bleeding,” her companion says, walking toward us. “I’m not even sure if he’s alive. He wouldn’t answer me no matter how much I shouted for him. We’re going to have to call for help soon.”

My panic increases. Did I hit Vaughn hard enough to kill him?
