“He’s not at home,” says the armed man. “These guys just told you that. Get moving or we’ll call the cops on you.”

Seth takes a step toward the gates but Simon and I pull him back.

“Let me go,” he hisses, trying to throw us off. “These assholes are playing with us. The traffic cam showed the senator’s car passing through these gates. He’s definitely in there.”

“We know,” I hurriedly whisper. “Let’s just get out of here and think of a different way to get inside.”

“There could be more of those guards with their AKs,” Simon whispers urgently. “We don’t have the time to deal with them right now. Our priority is to get to Rory as quickly as possible.”

Seth breathes hard but I catch the defeat in his eyes.

“Come on, Bruh,” I say, pulling him away from the gates. “We’ll find another way to get in.”

Silently signaling at Simon, I tell him to take the wheels while dragging Seth alongside me.

Pushing my brother into the backseat, I climb in.

“Go around the perimeter of the property,” I instruct Simon as he drives the car down the street. “We need to find a spot that’s close to the mansion and also accessible easily.”

The car creeps along the road as we stare at the tall walls that surround Senator Vaughn’s mansion. Since it’s late at night, the neighborhood is deserted, allowing us to move around without attracting attention.

“What do you think of that tree?” Simon says, slowing the car. “It’ll give us an easy entry over the walls.”

Staring straight ahead, I catch a glimpse of a silver oak that’s in full spring. Its thick, sturdy branches are spreading beyond the walls.

“That’s perfect,” I say. “The tree looks big enough to support our weights.”

Simon brings the car to a stop. Turning around to face us, he adds, “We’re still going to have to be extremely careful. Those guards will shoot without worrying about consequences.”

“I know,” I grate through clenched teeth.

“Come on,” Seth says in an impatient tone. “Let’s get out there already.”

I’m dying to reach Rory too. Each second away from her feels like torture but I’m able to stay in control of my emotions.

Seth’s desperation, however, is making him impatient and volatile. The wild look in his eyes adds to my worries as I glance toward Simon.

“You watch him and I’ll watch our backs,” Simon says as Seth climbs out of the car. “Don’t let him do anything stupid.”

“I know,” I mutter before following Seth.

Seth’s gaze moves up and down the wall. A second later, he approaches the car and steadily climbs over the roof.

The car dips under his weight, emitting a sorrowful groan. The added height gives him the perfect advantage to launch himself over the top of the wall.

“What do you see?” I whisper urgently.

“All clear,” he whispers, keeping his gaze on the other side of the wall. “You guys can come up here too. This part of the grounds has zero security. I guess the senator doesn’t like the guards peeping inside his mansion.”

With one glance at Simon, I jump onto the car’s hood and climb over the roof. A single leap is enough for me to catch hold of the wall’s ledge. I easily pull myself up and crouch beside Seth.

“Nice place, huh?” Simon mutters, staring at the mansion in the distance. “They said he’s not home but you can see the light on through almost every window. He’s not even pretending to be asleep.”

“Let’s go,” Seth says in a low grim tone. He uses the support of the branching oak tree and smoothly climbs down.

Simon and I follow him quietly.

While our brother eagerly moves toward the house, Simon and I keep a thorough lookout. Rory needs us. This moment is too critical for us to fuck up. We can’t alert any of the armed guards that are patrolling the grounds.
