“Get a hold of yourself, Rory!” I tell myself in an admonishing tone. “It’s just donuts, for cryin’ out loud!”

My hormones have been so crazy during my pregnancy that even something as minor as this makes me choke up. I gaze toward the mound of snacks on the kitchen counter and somehow, the sight makes me feel sadder.

Even though I know it’s absolutely crazy, I sob.

“Rory?” Simon’s voice startles me. “What’re you doing up so early, babe?”

Brushing away my tears quickly, I turn around to face him.

One look is all it takes for him to realize something is up with me. Moving closer to me, he pulls me in for a gentle hug. “What’s wrong, honey?” he asks in a soft voice.

“I want more of those Krispy Jelly Donuts,” I say in a broken voice.

“Didn’t Oliver get you some the other day?”

“Yeah, but I ate them all,” I groan.

“Hey, it’s okay,” he says, rubbing my shoulders. “How about this? We’ll go and buy some more for you later?”

I nod, struggling to keep my hormone-induced emotions in control. “Okay,” I say in a small voice.

“Hey, what are you guys doing here?” Seth’s voice filters into the room. Dressed in a thick nightgown, he steps inside the kitchen. “Are you okay, Rory?”

My mates have become overly anxious these days because my due date is barely a month away. One of them has always been keeping me company over the past week, making sure I’m never alone.

“I’m fine,” I say. Before I can tell him to go back to bed, I hear Oliver’s voice coming from the living room.

“We’re all in the kitchen,” Seth calls out loudly. “Get over here.”

Oliver appears in the doorway. His gaze zeroes in on me, making sure I’m okay.

“So, what are we all doing here?” he asks, yawning widely.

“Rory is craving those donuts you brought her,” Simon says. “Is there any chance you bought some more yesterday?”

“Uhh...no,” Oliver says, glancing at me apologetically. “If you want to eat more of them, I’ll grab some in the morning.”

I nod, feeling another stab of disappointment.

“How about this?” Seth says. “We can make you some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”

“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard,” Oliver announces at once. “In what hell would a sandwich compare to a fucking donut, Bruh?”

“It can help with Rory’s cravings,” Seth insists. “We’ll add extra jelly to soothe her cravings.”

My mates stare at me. It takes everything in me to smile at them. “It’s fine,” I say. “Just go back to sleep.”

“How do we go back to sleep when you look like that?” Oliver says with a groan. Moving closer, he runs a hand over the swell of my belly. “The babies want those darned donuts, don’t they?”

“Yeah,” I say in a quiet voice.

“What about the sandwiches?” Seth asks, looking hopeful.

An involuntary gag comes over me. At that instant, I know that no matter how well-meaning Seth is, I’m not going to be satisfied by peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

“There’s your answer,” Oliver says with a sneer.

“Well, let’s get going, then,” Simon says, moving toward the door.
