It’s a relief that none of the guards are anywhere near the house. The senator probably thinks his intimidating guards and high walls are enough to keep intruders away.

Seth moves toward the side of the mansion instead of heading toward the main front entrance. Light spills out of the clear glass windows, easing our way as we creep toward them.

Seth stops beside a window and looks in.

Simon stands at a distance, keeping a lookout while I crouch beside Seth.

A jolt goes through me as my gaze falls on three struggling women.

“Rory!” Seth shouts, making me jump.

“Sshh!” I hiss desperately, slapping a hand across Seth’s mouth. “Do you want to get caught?”

Seth tries to throw me off him but I wrap my arms around him and cling to him.

“What’s going on?” Simon whispers anxiously. “Did you see Rory?”

The scene unfolding before me sends rage flowing through my veins like hot lava. Rory is being manhandled by two women in black camo outfits. Even though I’m unable to get a clear view of their faces, I’m sure they’re the same people who followed her out of the mayor’s house.

“Ouch! Seth!” I hiss as my brother bites my hand. “Are you a fucking dog?” He’s gone completely rabid at the sight of one of them pulling at Rory’s hair.

“Let go of me!” he shouts. “They’re hurting Rory.”

“We need to help her right now,” Simon says in a grim voice.

“Keep a watch while Seth and I go in there and kick those women’s asses for hurting our Rory,” I say, loosening my hold on my elder brother. “Don’t come in after us no matter what happens. If we’re both compromised, call for help. One way or another, Rory needs to be taken away from this godforsaken place.”

“Seth’s not in his right mind,” Simon says in an anxious tone. “Just hurry and go after him.”

“Fuck, he didn’t even wait for me,” I groan, catching sight of Seth rounding the corner and disappearing from view. “Our idiot brother needs someone to knock some sense in him,” I say as anxiety grips me by the throat. “Those women could be armed! He’s behaving worse than a young cadet in training.”

“Just go,” Simon says. “And, be careful.”

I give him a nod and sprint after Seth.

My heart slams against my chest as I run at top speed. The threat of a lurking sniper sends a thrill of terror through me, not because I’m scared to lose my life but to imagine what would happen to Rory if we fail to get to her.

Seth pays absolutely no mind to anything as he rushes up the stairs leading to the mansion’s entrance. He stops before the heavy doors and hesitates before giving them a massive push.

A rush of relief spreads through me as the doors give away under his force. They swing open, allowing him to hurry inside.

“Rory!” Her name’s like a chant in my head as I run through the open doors.

A wide corridor leads the way inside a luxurious entrance hall. Expensive paintings and tall brass vases decorate the place but all my focus is zeroed in on the three women in the far distance.

Now that we’re both inside the house, we can hear Rory shouting and struggling against them. She’s fighting them desperately but her strength is no match for the two beta women who’ve clamped their arms around her.

“Let her go!” Seth shouts.

The three women come to a sudden halt.

Seth doesn’t give the women in black a chance to prepare for his sudden appearance. Reaching them, he pulls one away from Rory in one single move.

Fear swirls in her companion’s eyes. She continues keeping a hold on Rory but I can tell she’s nervous and fearful.

The woman tries to elbow Seth in the abdomen to loosen his grip.

“Big mistake,” I whisper as Seth easily grabs her arm and twists it behind her back.
