A painful gasp escapes her as he grabs a bunch of her hair with his other hand. The muscles in his arms bulge as he twists her head.

A sickening crunch erupts in the quiet room.

Seth loosens his hold and the woman’s body crumples to the floor in a lifeless heap.

The woman who’d been holding Rory pushes her away and points a gun at Seth. Her hands shake uncontrollably as Seth approaches her.

“Don’t hurt him!” Rory screams, launching herself at the stranger.

“Let go, bitch!” the woman shouts and pushes her away.

Rory doesn’t give up and grabs the woman’s hand that holds the gun. “Don’t you dare hurt him,” she shouts. “You’ll have to go through me to hurt my mates!”

Fire rages in Rory’s silvery eyes as she fights tooth and nail with her assaulter. Pride infuses my anxiety as I watch her.

Rory’s mental health has been improving day by day but I never thought she was in a place where she could fight with such energy and zest. Her panic attacks usually came out of nowhere, rendering her incapable of breathing.

Rory should be shaking with fear. Instead, she’s actively fighting the woman who’s trying to hurt me and Seth.

Before I have the chance to decide what to do with the remaining stranger, Seth reaches her. His strength allows him to easily snatch the gun out of her hands.

The relieved look on Rory’s face lasts merely a second as Seth pulls the trigger in the blink of an eye. The beta’s body jolts from the sudden gunshot as she stares at Seth’s murderous expression.

“Shit!” I mutter, hurrying forward.

“Why the hell did you have to do that?” I hiss as the woman’s body collapses on the floor. A stream of blood flows from the center of her forehead and gently drips onto the pristine white marble tiles.

“Rory, it’s okay,” I say, reaching her and pulling her against my chest.

Her soft body trembles against mine as I hold her tightly. It’s only now that I notice her pretty gown has been ripped to shreds. Bruises darken her wrists and arms. A crimson spot marks the pale skin of her neck, telling me someone cruelly bit her.

Rage burns through me at the sight. Vaughn hurt her and nearly broke her. Breathing hard, I try to calm the storm raging in my chest.

“We’re here to take you home,” I say in the gentlest voice I can muster. “We won’t let anyone hurt you. You’re always safe with us, Princess.”

“I was so scared she’d hurt you and Seth,” she says through breathless gasps. “I’d have died if something happened to you guys. I’d never be able to live with myself knowing I was the cause of your deaths.”

Taking off my jacket, I place it over her trembling shoulders. The material is large enough to cover her body, hiding the rips and holes in her tattered dress.

“We’re going to get you out of here,” I promise, patting her back. “Just hold on, okay?”

Clinging to me, she sobs hard.

Seth stands close to us. The wild, enraged look in his eyes has disappeared as he simply gazes at Rory.

While she clings to me, my gaze swings toward the windows lining the side of the wall that faces the western grounds. I spot Simon right outside the third one, staring at us with wide eyes.

I signal for him to keep his post. We need him to continue to keep a lookout until we’ve gotten Rory out of the house.

“Let’s get out of here,” I say, gazing toward Seth.

Rory suddenly steps away from me. Wiping her eyes with the back of her hand, she stares at me with the strangest expression.

“There’s something you guys should know,” she whispers, looking suddenly scared.

“We can talk after we go back home,” Seth says. Now that he’s seen Rory with his own eyes, his rage and wildness have calmed down.

Rory shakes her head. “It’s got to be now.” Stepping closer to both of us, she whispers, “I might’ve killed Vaughn.”
