A wild chuckle escapes me as another gust of wind blows past me. Taking a deep breath, I take the jump.

Oliver’s arms catch me before my feet can hit the car’s roof. Gently lowering me onto my feet, he pulls me close for a kiss.

His familiar fragrance envelops my senses, making me forget about everything for a moment. Closing my eyes, I simply savor the feeling of being in his arms.

“It’s barely been hours but I’ve fucking missed you,” Oliver says, staring into my eyes with such intensity that it makes my heart pound.

“I thought I’d never see you again,” I whisper.

A storm rages in his eyes as he pulls me to the side. I can feel he wants to say more to me but he stays silent as Seth lands beside us.

“You need to hurry,” Oliver says in an urgent tone as Seth jumps down to the ground. “I hate leaving Simon in there.”

Seth pulls open the car’s door and fidgets in the glove compartment. He’s out within seconds with a small box in his hand.

“I’m going back in,” says Seth, pulling himself back onto the car’s roof. “Simon and I will come back within ten minutes. I’m going to bug the guy’s bedroom and living room, so it won’t take long. Just get inside the car and keep Rory safe.”

My anxiety heightens as I watch Seth climb back onto the roof and then, jump over to the other side. Even though Oliver is right beside me, I can’t stop worrying about him and Simon.

“Come on,” says Oliver. “Let’s wait for them inside the car. If there’s any trouble, I can at least drive us away from here.”

With a light leap, he lands on the ground. Straightening up, he holds up his arms.

A light feeling bubbles inside me as I rest my hands on his shoulders and allow him to pull me down by my waist.

“Are you okay?” he asks, watching me closely.

Taking a deep breath, I nod. Now that I’m standing on the other side of the wall, an intense relief spreads through me.

I’m truly free.

Vaughn can neither hurt me nor force me to divulge any information about the rescued omegas. His evil minions are dead and along with them, the threat of being locked and tortured is also gone.

“How do you feel?” he asks, looking concerned.

“I feel relieved,” I say honestly. A smile finally lifts the corners of my lips as I move closer to hug him tightly. “Thank you for coming after me. I don’t think I would’ve lasted much longer in there.”

Oliver’s arms tighten around me. His body stiffens against me while his breathing turns harsh and heavy.

Stepping away, I look up at him. “What’s wrong?”

“You even have to ask, Rory?” he says in a low, rigid voice. A grim expression spreads over his features. “We were going crazy. You have no idea what we went through while we searched for you.”

“I’m sorry,” I say in a small voice. “I was just trying to—”

A heavy sigh escapes him. Rubbing his forehead, he looks at me with a tortured expression.

“I shouldn’t be behaving this way with you,” he says, looking away. “You’re safe and that’s all that matters. Let’s go and sit inside the car. You’ll be warmer there.” Moving forward, he opens the door and waits for me to climb in.

A deep ache goes through me. I know what Oliver is feeling right now.

He has no idea why I suddenly decided to run out of Dad’s party and ended up in Vaughn Dumas’s mansion. My erratic actions must’ve made him feel betrayed and hurt.

Seth and Simon must be feeling the same way too.

“You should talk to your dad,” he says after a while.

“What?”
