“He’s been worried about you too,” he says, staring at me with a firm expression. “While we were busy dicking around, your dad paid attention to you. He noticed you missing and started looking for you. We’d have never known you were gone if it wasn’t for him.” A heavy sigh escapes him. “I don’t even know what we’d have done if we were a second too late.”

A shudder goes through me. The two beta soldiers would’ve dragged me into Vaughn’s basement and kept me there. My mates would’ve never known where to find me. That’s when a new curiosity arises within me.

“How did you guys know I was here?”

“Your dad’s security cams showed us you walked out without a backward glance,” he says. “We noticed the two women who followed you all the way down the street. It was odd as hell, so we asked Julian to help us track you through traffic cams.”

“Who is Julian?”

“Julian is one of the omegas of the Solveig Pack. Without his help, we’d have never been able to find you in time.”

“Both your cousin and Julian are mates to the Solveig brothers?” I ask, feeling confused about two omegas in one pack.

“I’ll tell you all about him another time, but you’ve got to call your dad and tell him you’re fine,” he says firmly. “Call him right now, Rory.”

“I left my stuff in my room,” I say, avoiding looking at him directly as shame and guilt spread through me.

His mouth tightens but he stops himself from scolding me or cursing at me. Instead, he reaches inside his pocket and hands me his phone.

“Use mine, then,” he says, scrolling down the screen. “Here.”

Surprise flickers through me. “You have my dad’s contact saved in your phone?”

“Your dad has all our numbers too,” he says. “You’re lucky to have a dad who cares so much about you, Rory. Appreciate him more. He’s doing the best he can for you.”

His words stab me.

I know Dad’s doing his best to protect me and look after me. It hurts me to know my actions caused him pain but what could I have done? Jake’s threat forced me to walk out on him and my mates.

“Tell him that you’re safe,” Oliver says. “Tell him you went to see a friend and that you’re on your way home with us.”

I nod and make the call.

“Oliver?” Dad gasps the moment he picks up the call. “Is Rory okay?”

“Dad, it’s me,” I say, hating the panic in his voice.

“Oh, Rory!” He exhales a loud sigh. “Thank God, you’re all right, sweetheart.”

“I’m fine,” I say, trying to keep a light tone despite the choke that suffocates me. “I’m sorry I didn’t say anything before leaving the party. You were busy with your guests and I thought I’d be able to go back soon. My friends and I started chatting and I lost track of time completely.”

“Do you always have to be so irresponsible?” Dad says in an admonishing tone. “Seth, Oliver, and Simon got so anxious when they couldn’t find you anywhere. They care for you, honey. They’re your mates. You can’t treat them this way.”

“Dad, I’m sorry.”

“You’ve got to think twice before behaving so rashly,” Dad says, refusing to back down. “You’re lucky to have met your mates who truly want to protect you. Cherish them, sweetheart.”

I swallow the lump in my throat. “Yes, Dad,” I mumble.

“Now, why aren’t you calling from your phone?”

“I think I left my purse in my room.”

“Rory!” he shouts. “You can’t keep behaving this way! How could you leave your phone behind? Do you have any idea how worried we all were?!”

“Dad, you sound mad right now. I’m sure you’re tired and hungry. How about we talk in the morning after you’ve had some rest?”

He lets out a scoff. “If I didn’t have guests to look after right now, I’d have followed you back to Burton Estate to teach you a lesson.” The severity in his voice leaves no doubt in my mind that he’s being very serious about his threat.
