“Dad, you must be busy. How about we talk tomorrow?”

He makes an annoyed noise.

“Good night, Dad.”

“Night,” he says in a sullen voice before switching off the call.

I let out a long exhale and slump against the seat.

“What did he say?” Oliver asks.

“He bit my head over what I did.” Raising my gaze, I look into his eyes. “Aren’t you curious about why I ran away like that?”

“I am,” he says, looking grim. “There’s got to be an explanation about why you threw yourself into such a dangerous situation tonight. My brothers are curious too, so I’ll hold back from asking any questions right now.”

An internal war wages inside me. Should I tell them about Jake and every horrible thing he’s done to me in the past?

“If you love us, you’ll tell us the truth,” Oliver says with a vulnerable look in his eyes.

“I love you,” I reply in a heartbeat.

“Then, you must tell us the truth, Rory.”

Taking a deep breath, I nod. “I will tell you everything that—” My words are cut off as the sound of loud boots suddenly reaches my ears.

“Shit,” Oliver curses and starts up the car.

“What’s going on?” I ask, turning behind to spot a group of men coming toward us.

“Go, go, go!” Simon’s voice sounds from somewhere close by.

Next moment, the roof of the car is hit by two weights, making the car jolt.

“Drive, Bruh!” Simon shouts.

“Hold on tight!” Oliver hollers and steps on the gas.

My heart pounds against my chest as adrenaline rushes through my veins.

I’m thrown back against my seat as the car shoots forward. Before I can get a clue to what’s happening, the thunderous roar of gunshots follows us as Oliver drives around a bend in the street.

The car comes to a sudden stop.

Next moment, Seth and Simon slide into view outside the car’s window and jump into the back passenger seats.

“Step on it, Bruh,” Simon gasps breathlessly.

More gunshots are fired at us as Oliver drives away at top speed.

My heart hammers in my chest from a rush of adrenaline. Turning around, I glance at Simon and Seth, feeling a sliver of relief. They’re both safe.

This is all that matters, I tell myself as the sound of gunshots recedes in the distance. Oliver speeds down the dark, deserted street, carrying us further away from Vaughn’s mansion.

My heart lifts the moment the car enters through the gates of Burton Estate. The familiarity of the guards in maroon uniforms brings me a sense of relief. They salute Oliver as we pass by them.
