Walking away from the window, I hurry inside the bathroom to wash up.

A glance at the mirror shows me my pale face. My mascara left dark tracks on my cheeks while my lipstick’s smeared around the corners of my mouth.

As I reach toward the tap, I see the faint bruises on my wrists. They were left by Vaughn when he tried to force himself on me.

Disgust and hatred rise inside me as I desperately splash water on my face and rub my cheeks. A part of me knows that a makeup remover would do a better job but I don’t have the patience.

Grabbing a towel, I wipe my face harshly.

My eyes are still rimmed in sooty black but most of my face is clear. Deciding it’s all I can do for now, I hurry out of the bathroom and head downstairs.

I hear familiar voices as I get near the kitchen.

Peering through the threshold, I gaze at my mates. Seth’s sitting at the dining table while Simon is arranging the dishes and cutlery. Oliver is manically scraping a pan on the stove. From the smell wafting toward me, I realize he’s cooking scrambled eggs.

Pure bliss flows through me at the sight.

Dressed in their immaculate military uniforms, they remind me of knights and princes from a bygone era. They look so handsome, that I take a moment to simply stare at them.

“I’m heading over to Solveig Estate to meet Caleb,” Seth says, drawing me out of my daze. “He needs to know about Vaughn Dumas and his associations with the Black Widow.”

“I wish we could come with you too,” says Simon, taking a seat at the table. “But this is something that we can’t delay. Our towns aren’t safe while bastards like Dumas and Kelso are roaming free. If they can’t get their hands on the runaway omegas, they’ll resort to kidnapping them off the streets. We can’t let that happen.”

Seth’s expression hardens.

“Here, breakfast’s ready,” Oliver says, smacking the smoking pan on the table.

Simon peers over the edge of the pan and makes a face. “You’ve nearly burned it.”

“Don’t complain,” Seth says shortly. He’s about to reach for a piece of bread when he suddenly gets distracted. His nostrils flare as he glances toward me. “Rory, hey...”

I step inside the kitchen and walk into Oliver’s arms. His gingery scent washes over me, making me feel safe and warm.

“Did you sleep well?” he asks, kissing my cheek.

“Yeah,” I reply, capturing his lips.

Oliver’s tongue darts into my mouth, kissing me thoroughly. Heat flows through my veins, making me tighten my arms around his shoulders.

“How about some breakfast?” Oliver says with one last peck on my lips.

I’m a breathless mess from his kiss, so I simply nod and sink into a chair.

Oliver grabs a plate and starts loading it up with a mountain of scrambled eggs when Seth’s phone vibrates on the table.

“Yes,” Seth answers curtly. His expression swiftly changes as he listens to the call. “Escort the mayor to our cottage right away,” Seth says in a commanding tone. Putting the phone down, he looks directly at me. “Your dad’s here.”

“What?! Why?”

“I bet he’s come to check on you,” says Simon.

“Should I go upstairs and change into something else?” I’m still wearing one of their shirts that I grabbed last night and a pair of shorts.

My mates stare at me in unison.

“Nah, you look great just the way you are,” says Simon. Coming over to me, he pecks my lips.

I wanted the kiss to last longer but relent. Dad would be here any minute. He’s definitely come to see if I’m okay.
