“Callahan will have answers for us but he’s a tight-lipped asshole,” Caleb says with a disgusted look on his face. “There have been times he’s tried to misguide us in our investigations. No matter what he tells you today, you must be very careful with what you believe. He loves twisting the truth to confuse us. Damon is the only one he’s scared of but we don’t let Damon get close to him too often. We don’t want to kill the bastard before he’s spilled his secrets to us.”

Damon is Caleb’s younger brother. He’s a master in torture and infamous for his bloodthirsty means to snatch answers from the enemy.

“I won’t kill him but he will have to answer me,” I say through clenched teeth.

Caleb’s hand falls on my shoulder. “I understand your desperation but you must be patient. Callahan wants us to kill him. He’s the leader of the underground movement that’s hellbent on eradicating the peace in our society. He’d rather die than give up his secrets. The only way to get answers from him is fear.”

“That’s why you’re accompanying me,” I say with a sideward glance at him. “You’ll have to stop me when I lose control.” Closing my eyes, I will my heart to calm down.

Caleb halts in his steps. “Is everything okay?”

I stare into the depths of his steely-gray eyes. The silvery shade instantly reminds me of Rory, making it difficult for me to stay in control.

The wild beast within me is lusting for blood.

I came too close to losing my mate last night. The fear of someone snatching her away is still instilled in me. I’m struggling to stay focused and not make a rash mistake.

“I killed two Black Widow mercenaries last night,” I say in a low voice. “They were hurting Rory. I didn’t even think twice before ending their lives.”

“Were they armed?”

“One of them held a gun.”

His fingers dig deep into my shoulder. “You were in the middle of a battle. Your mate was vulnerable and you did everything you could to protect her. I’d have probably done the same thing if I found Iris or Julian in a similar situation.”

“I didn’t want Rory to see me like that,” I say, remembering the shocked look in her eyes. “I don’t want her to be scared of me.”

“You protected her last night. She saw what you’d do to save her. Besides, Rory was among the omegas we rescued from the Black Widow. She’s seen and experienced things that are worse than death.”

Hatred and rage flow through my veins like poison. I want to punish every bastard who’s connected with the omega trafficking ring.

Caleb gestures toward a high-rising building. From the outside, it looks like another structure that’s dedicated to office work. However, only selected individuals are allowed to step through the opaque glass doors.

The basement of this particular building houses the ancient dungeons that belonged to the Solveig Pack for centuries. This is the place where they keep the most dangerous criminals for interrogation.

Only a handful of soldiers from our packs know that the leader of the Black Widow is chained up here. We’ve kept his capture a secret so that his followers drop their guards against us, making it easier for us to gather the evidence needed to arrest them all.

“Come on,” Caleb says, walking toward the building.

The guards at the door salute us with somber faces. Giving them curt nods, I follow Caleb inside a vast lobby. The setup looks the same as any admin building with a smiling secretary at the front desk.

Caleb ignores her and leads me down a deserted hallway. Pushing open a nondescript door, he leads me inside a small room.

Towers of old, dilapidated computers and other machinery parts crowd the space. An old lamp flickers overhead, throwing long, dark shadows in every corner.

With a steady gaze, he moves toward a worn cupboard and opens the doors.

A pair of shiny steel doors materializes before us.

Caleb takes a step forward and presses a passcode on the glowing panel set on the side.

The steel doors slide open, revealing a spacious elevator. I can’t help but be impressed by the level of secrecy the Solveig Pack has maintained while catering to the most wanted criminal in our nation.

I walk in after him and watch the doors slide closed.

Instead of going up, the elevator smoothly descends. My gaze flickers toward the top panel as it takes us to the lowest basement area.

The elevator comes to a stop. I walk out the moment the doors slide open.
