Moving forward, Simon grabs three of them. “Let’s pay up and bite into them right away.”

I give an enthusiastic nod and follow them toward the counter to pay for our stuff.

Warmth bubbles in my chest. I don’t need expensive bags or jewelry to feel satisfied. It’s amazing to realize how happy a simple trip to the supermarket can make me. As we head to our car, I silently vow to come back here to hoard more stuff for myself and my mates.

My gaze focuses on the black camo outfits of the guards surrounding our car. A chill spreads through me as I’m reminded of the Black Widow mercenaries who wore similar uniforms.

Leaning against the open window at his side, Oliver chats with one of the guards. A relaxed grin spreads on my mate’s face as he brings out his ID card.

As my gaze roves over the soldiers, I realize that the ominous symbol of the spider is missing from all their uniforms. Their exposed skins are also free from the Widow’s mark.

“Hey, are you okay?” Simon asks in a quiet voice as the car drives forward.

“The Solveig Pack wears black,” I say. “They remind me of the Black Widow.”

An understanding expression comes over him as he nods. “It’s an unfortunate coincidence.” Squeezing my hand, he leans in to kiss me. “Don’t worry, though. Solveig Estate is a safe and secure place. No one here will hurt you.”

Taking a deep breath, I look ahead, taking in the vast grounds that lie before me. Groups of young soldiers march past us, giving me a glimpse of the Solveig Pack’s activities.

“The smen look so young,” I say, staring at the soldiers who seem barely older than twenty.

“Yep. This property is used to train recruits,” Oliver explains from the front seat. “Caleb, Damon, and Raiden are responsible for training them and making soldiers out of them.”

Soon, I catch sight of an ancient manor in the distance. The last rays of the dying sun fall on its walls, highlighting the pack’s crest over the arch of a wide doorway.

The car comes to a stop beside the imposing structure.

“Let’s go,” Simon says, opening the door to his side.

Gathering the bouquet and wine, I follow him. My gaze roves all around the lush greenery around me. Solveig Estate is just as beautiful and majestic as Burton Estate. It’s easy to tell I’m among another ancient military pack who’ve been protecting us over the centuries.

A cool breeze blows by, playing with the hem of my dress.

Moving to my side, Oliver wraps an arm around my shoulders. “Don’t be nervous,” he says with a warm grin. “You may not have met Iris and her mates, but they’re practically family.”

We’re about to move toward the front doors when Seth walks out. His face instantly lights up as he meets my gaze. Hurrying forward, he pulls me into a hug.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” he says, squeezing me.

“What about us?” Oliver quips at once.

Straightening up, Seth glares at him. “Why are you so late? I was expecting you much earlier. Do you have any idea how anxious I feel knowing Rory’s unprotected?”

“She wasn’t unprotected,” Simon says, rolling his eyes. “We were with her. And it took us longer to get here because we were shopping.”

“I wanted to buy some flowers for Iris,” I say, holding up the bouquet of carnations in my arms. “I’m sorry I worried you.”

He pushes a stray lock of hair behind my ear and rests his forehead against my shoulder. “I’m sorry about being so hard on you. It’s just that I’m still coping with what happened yesterday.”

“It’s not your fault,” I say. “After what happened last night, you’re bound to be anxious.”

“Rory,” he whispers, inhaling my scent deeply.

“How long do we have to stand here?” Simon mutters. “Let her go already so she can go meet Iris.”
