“But Rory doesn’t look like she wants to leave anytime soon,” Simon says from the opposite side of the table.

He’s right about the way I feel. It’s been a long time since I had so much fun with people who are not my mates. After my traumatic time with the Black Widow, I’d completely forgotten what it was like to be among friends.

“It’s all right,” I force myself to say. “We can visit another time, right?”

Iris nods encouragingly. “Absolutely! And, we can always come visit you too. It’s been a while since I’ve met Grandpa Charlie.”

“Crazy Charlie would love that,” Oliver says, grinning.

“Don’t call him that!” Seth hisses.

“No visits until we’ve got Senator Dumas and his buddies under arrest,” Caleb says. The grim expression on his face matches Seth’s. He’s the leader of Solveig Pack and is just as worried about his mates as Seth.

“Then, just arrest them all!” Julian huffs, looking deeply annoyed. “What’re you waiting for?”

“We’ve got to be patient,” says Iris. “It won’t be easy to go after a senator without concrete proof.”

“I’ve bugged his place,” Seth says with a cold grin. “I’m sure we’ll start getting intel within a few days.” Getting to his feet, he gestures at his brothers. “Come on. It’s time to take Rory home.”

Simon and Oliver obey him immediately.

A sliver of disappointment goes through me. I’d hoped to spend a few more hours with my new friends.

Iris quickly wraps up the rest of the brownies and hands them to me. “How about we meet up again?” she asks.

“I’d love that,” I say, hugging her.

“My men are waiting to escort you home,” Caleb says, staring at his cell phone.

Seth and his brothers shake his hand before guiding me out of the dining room.

“You can call me anytime you want to talk,” Iris says as we move toward the entrance hall. “Even though I can’t be of much help, I’m always here to listen.”

“Thanks,” I say gratefully. “Make sure you visit us sometime soon.”

“If only he’ll let us,” Julian says, frowning at Caleb.

With a sudden move, Caleb wraps an arm around Julian’s waist and pulls him closer for a kiss.

“Let go of me!” Julian mutters but doesn’t fight Caleb’s embrace.

Iris chuckles, shaking her head.

“Thanks for the brownies, Cuz,” Oliver says, hugging Iris as we reach the door.

A chilly breeze sweeps in, making me shiver. I blow on my hands as we step outside and look toward the four army trucks standing right behind Oliver’s car.

“Here, take my jacket,” Simon says, covering me with his coat.

“What about you?” I ask as another gust of cold wind blows past us.

“I’ll be fine inside the car,” he says, squeezing my hand.

“I’ll take the lead,” Seth says, moving toward the truck in the front.

“Come on,” Simon says. “You’re sitting with us.”

We get into the back passenger seats while Oliver settles into the driver’s seat. Caleb, Iris, and Julian wave at us as Seth starts his truck.
