“Good.”

He salutes me and my brothers before walking toward his subordinates.

“What did Lucas want?” Oliver asks.

“He wants me to listen to something of interest,” I say, staring at the activities happening around me. “Let’s go and see what the bugs picked up.”

“Who knew the evening could turn into such an action-packed party?” Oliver says, grimacing as an assassin struggles against two of our soldiers.

“Let’s get going,” I say, gesturing toward my brothers. “I’m going to have to go see Mom after this.”

“What for?” Simon asks, walking alongside me as I head toward my truck.

“Dad sent me home with some flowers for her,” I say with a sigh. “He even bought a basket of muffins for Rory.”

Oliver chuckles. “He’s serious about winning her trust, then.”

“It’ll take a lot more than muffins for Rory to warm up to our dads,” Simon says with a light laugh. “She needs more time to get to know them before understanding them.”

My brothers climb into the back of the truck while I get into the front. The scent of roses hits my nose, cleansing the stench of gunpowder and blood. Inhaling deeply, I step on the gas and drive down the hilly path to get back to the expressway that’ll take us home.

After a short ride, we enter the gates of Burton Estate.

My heart yearns to go to Rory but I drive the truck toward the administrative buildings in the far distance. Whatever conversation Sergeant Lucas’s team caught tonight must be important enough for him to be calling me this late.

I bring the truck to a stop outside the admin building and climb out.

“Bruh, you got any snacks on you?” Oliver asks as we enter through the gates.

“Here,” I say, taking out a granola bar from my jacket pocket.

“Thanks!” He gushes, snatching the bar out of my hand. An instant gleeful grin spreads on his lips as he takes a bite.

“Hey, let me have a bite too,” Simon moans.

Warmth flares inside my chest when I see them both grinning like idiots. Wiping away my emotions, I enter the darkened surveillance room.

Gigantic LCD screens, showing various feeds from the cameras installed around the estate, emit most of the light here. The guards monitoring them sit up a little straighter as we walk down the aisles to reach Sergeant Lucas’s team.

Seated inside an enclosed glass-walled room, the men don’t immediately become alert to our presence. It’s only when we’ve entered the soundproof enclosure that they get to their feet to salute us.

“Captain Seth,” Lucas greets me with a relieved look on his face. “I’m so glad I could get to you before they could attack you.”

Tall and well-built, he’s an alpha in his thirties and easily distinguishable among the beta cadets who’re sitting around the desks with headphones over their heads.

I glance at my brothers before fixing my gaze on Lucas.

“I’m afraid you were a little late in reaching out to me,” I say, gesturing at my torn sleeves.

“Shit,” he curses, grinding his teeth together.

“Were you able to catch the senator planning the attack?” Simon asks from beside me.

“The asshole had the whole thing planned earlier but we caught him talking about it with a guy called Jake,” Lucas says in a grim tone. “We couldn’t guess the timing of the attack, so I called you the moment my subordinate played out the clip for me.”

“So, you caught something more interesting?” Oliver asks.

Lucas nods. “Are you sure you want to listen to it right away or do you need some time to get patched up?” He stares at my scraped, bloodied skin that’s visible through the gaps in my torn sleeves.
