Straightening up, I hurry out of the room and shut the door behind me.

Muffled sobs reach my ears but I force myself to walk away. There’s no way I can help her without defeating Jake first.

The thought renews my resolve as I head toward a different hallway. The door to the basement comes into my sight and for a moment, a sliver of surprise flares inside me.

The door looks new. It’s the only thing I’ve noticed that’s changed in this house.

Pushing it open, I step onto the first step that leads down to the underground chamber. Even though I lived in this house for months, I never ventured into the basement before.

Taking the stairs, I make my way to the bottom.

My surprise grows as I look around me. Wall-mounted lamps illuminate the space, brightly lighting up the smooth walls and the racks of server units mounted along them. The temperature has dropped several degrees in here, making me shiver.

“Rory, look for the computer that’s controlling the servers,” a different male voice speaks through the earpiece.

“Julian? Is that you?”

“Hi,” he says in a cheerful voice. “I can’t believe you managed to make it into the basement already. Good job, Rory!”

A grin forms on my lips.

Blue, red, and green lights blink at me from every corner as I walk between the rows of server units. The basement takes up the entire floor of the house. I can’t believe how I missed it while I lived here.

A computer unit finally comes into my sight at the furthest corner of the basement. Moving closer to it, I stare at the blank blue screen.

“What should I do now?” I ask.

“Get hold of the mouse and see if it’s a lock screen,” Julian’s voice answers me.

Placing my hand on the mouse, I hover it over the pad.

Immediately, a login window materializes on the screen.

“Shit! I was afraid of this,” Julian moans. “It’ll take forever to hack into this system.”

“What happens if I can guess the password?” I ask.

“You’ll probably just get three chances before the system locks down permanently and sends a warning to the people overseeing the servers remotely,” says Julian. “So, be very careful. One wrong move and we’ll lose everything.”

“If Jake has any control over these servers, I can guess the password,” I say, staring at the login window on the screen.

“Can you do that?” Seth’s urgent voice sounds in my ear.

“He uses the same password for his phone, iPad, and Netflix account,” I tell them.

“It’s worth a shot,” Julian says. “Do it.”

I don’t even breathe as I carefully type in the password. A tiny beep sounds before the log in window disappears and opens up the desktop screen.

“Halleluiah!” Julian screams, nearly turning me deaf. “You did it! You motherfucking sweet girl, you did it!”

“Stop cursing our girl,” I hear Simon’s hiss in the background.

Julian’s chuckles fill my ear as a grin comes onto my lips. It feels so damn satisfying to break into something that belongs to Jake and ruin it.

“What should I do next?” I ask.

“Okay, okay, take a deep breath,” Julian says in an excited voice. “Do you have the pen drive that Oliver gave you?”
